POCANTICO HILLS - U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, who contracted Lyme disease earlier this year, warned today of the high risk of the illness throughout Westchester County and pledged to press for more federal money to battle the tick-borne disease.
Schumer, speaking during a morning press conference at Rockefeller State Park Preserve, is introducing legislation that would authorize $100 million over five years for prevention and treatment of the disease. It is similar to a bill that he introduced last year.
"Lyme disease affects everyone, young and old," said Schumer. Later, he added, "Lyme disease is something we can do a lot about."
Lyme disease can cause a rash and flu-like symptoms in the early stages and
may lead to more serious neurological problems if not treated.
There have been nearly 2,500 cases of Lyme disease in the county alone since 2002, according to Schumer.
