Last Thursday I started Bactrim (I've been taking Malarone + Biaxin, he switched me off Biaxin and onto Bactrim but kept Malarone). How do you know whether you are herxing vs. having an adverse reaction to the bactrim? i'm having lots of fever, sweats, my joints were unbearable all weekend, malaise, fatigue. I'm assuming it's a herx? Do you need to see a rash and/or breathign difficulties for it to be a sulfa allergy?
And (I'm sorry for sounding like a bad pharma commercial)is it normal for me to feel like I need to go to the bathroom all the time, even if I don't? Normally I'd say UTI symptom but how can I have a UTI when I've been on abx nonstop since last summer, and I just started the abx that's used especially for UTIs?
sheesh.
thanks! C

I know my urinary frequency - the feeling that I was getting a UTI all the time - was primarily caused by food allergies, not Lyme - though medication allergies I imagine could cause this also.
Have you eliminated grains? Dairy? Eggs? Red meat? Sugars?
I find I have the most trouble with these. It may be worth doing an elimination diet. I know parasites love iron, cholesterol, sugar, and surprisingly lignens - probably the reason I can't take flaxseed oil.
But I was able to get my bladder working right again prior to any treatment, just by weeding out problem foods. Something to consider if antibiotics aren't doing the trick.

I had the UTI symptoms as well. Mostly went away with IV rocephin, but does come back when I herx. I sometimes treat for yeast at that time and it helps also.

If there is truly a UTI, bactrim will take care of it. Sulfa drugs are the choice bladder drug.
My daughter has bladder problems when herxing.

Thanks, everyone, for your thoughts. I usually don't have any issues with food allergies, and I haven't changed my diet recently, so I'm more likely to think it's either a reaction to the new abx or the herx. If it keeps up, I suppose I can always call the doc. C
