I'm not sure if I spelled these right, but this is what my insurance is making me try first (before Malarone or Mepron) for babesia or malaria.

Anybody use this one? Does it work?

I'm worried - I want the good stuff here.

I'm to take a half tablet twice a day, but I don't know the strength yet. Help?

Oh my God. I'm reading about this one and everybody is saying it's going to give me insomnia, panic attacks, and wild mood swings - even psychosis.

I actually felt this way when I tried zithromax the other week - it cleared up my GI symptoms, but I could only tolerate the lack of sleep for 4 days. And the panic attacks were horrific on zith. And the GI symptoms are already back.

I'm not in control of my emotions as it is. I think I'm going to cry. It's like somebody else is living in my brain - maybe even Satan.

Oh my God - it says I'm going to hear voices of people talking in other languages or something, too. If I'd have known they were going to do this to me, I'd have done drugs as a teenager just to get a feel for it.

I've not heard good things about Larium in people that have other medical conditions--used in an extended period of time.

This is prescribed to prevent malaria, but you need to do some reading on this medication, when it was manufactured, etc.

My only understanding is through a friend that traveled extensively through Africa for over a year. She also took the larium for that period of time. Anxiety, panic, delusion, were her symptoms.

Maybe someone on the board can give you further help.

Hi,

I did Larium for 5 months in the past( one pill a week) and now I'm again on it since May (one pill every 5 days).

Larium or Mefloquine is a good medication IMO'

I have done several antibabesia protocols (mepron, zithro, artemisia, quina, etc) and Larium/mefloquine plus one malarone a day is the best IMO.

Faster relief of the sx, less dosages than mepron....and I didn't/don't have those "horrid" side effects people mention here.

Just had a couple of nightmares the first time I tried it.

I'm not on it though along with Malarone. My insurance won't let me have the Malarone.

I'm worried, too - he has me taking 1/2 tablet twice daily. Isn't that a lot? Most it seems take one pill every week or every couple of days.

I guess I'm getting pretty good though at figuring out what I should and should not take - and for how long. I've had the 'pleasure' of experiencing every reaction possible - that if my poop so much as turns yellow, I know my liver is not happy.

Also, if I feel like throwing phones at people and so forth, I know now it is not a 'psych' problem for someone as mild-mannered as me - it is brain inflammation - and I know to slow down or stop (unless it's someone I don't like).

I honestly get personality changes from certain foods even - I won't be eating chocolate soy yogurt again after an 'event'.

I think though that I have ehrlichia, too. I haven't been on any of the 'cyclines' like doxy or mino. I asked him for mino last visit - he didn't want to give me it. Don't know why.

Also, this pill is supposed to cause hair loss and vomiting. I just took my first dose maybe an hour ago - no stomach problems yet - just a funny feeling in my left eye and the left side of my head - also, pains in the left side of my spine - though I sometimes get this feeling other times.

Did anybody lose hair while on this? I can handle my stomach falling out, but I lost enough hair already. Sounds vain, but heck - I miss my long, thick, lush spiral perms.

Just thought I'd update here.

I've taken two doses of the Larium so far. I actually didn't feel too much different than I normally would feel at this time, with one exception.

Within about 15 minutes of each does, I had severe (but brief) extremely sharp pains in my spine.

I don't think it's doing anything though to whatever is proliferating in my mouth though - not even Trimox is getting that one.

I'll bet I have ehrlichia, too. I have yet to take any of the 'cyclines'.

Now wait - I also feel kind of spaced out, too, soon after taking this one - almost high. Yikes!

Lymeblue,

Thanks for posting that!

I may be adding Larium to Malarone soon, and it's good to hear a positive experience with it, after all the horror stories!

I don't know. My bowel movements are turning yellow on me again, and with me, it's hard to tell because this is what happens when I'm allergic to foods or substances, too. I also didn't get to bed until the early morning hours - also a symptom of allergy for me. How do I know if it's an allergic reaction to Larium or just die-off?

I don't feel any of my symptoms subsiding - if anything, they have gotten worse. The only effect I notice when I take this is I get sharp, needle-like pains in my back and ribs every time - within a few minutes.

I also start feeling a little spaced-out or lightheaded - not really dizzy though.

I hope you feel better and it maybe a good thing you are saved from taking Mepron.

Mepron made me incredibly depressed. I am now taking 1 pill/half a dose of Malarone a day and I am much happier.

Vanilla - I wonder if I'd do better on malarone. My insurance denied it though.

I think I'm going to skip a few days here though. I honestly think I'm looking yellow again like I did last summer since starting this one.

I wonder if my red blood cells all burst and are now stuck in my liver. I'm kind of down and moody, too, since starting it.

Just an update here for anyone on Larium - I only lasted 3 doses - as it was written to take a half pill twice daily. Isn't that kind of high?

Basically, my liver is not happy again. In fact, I feel like I've lost all progress made thus far.

My stools are bulky and yellow and oily again with undigested food stuck in it.

I am unable to eat even those foods that I was able to eat.

My skin has a funny color to it - kind of an off-yellow, but pale.

I'm not sleeping - that's been bad though.

Does this mean I have babs? Did all my red blood cells burst and end up in my liver?

Maybe I will go the more natural route and try quinine, assuming I am able to move these toxins out of my liver a second time.

Anybody have any luck on quinine? And how much did you take? Thanks!

I recently began taking Lariam for babesia and started out at 1/2 pill (125 mg) per week. After two weeks of this dose, had to back off because of terrible insomnia.

After a 2 week break, re-started Lariam, taking 1/4 pill per week. So far, after two weeks, no problems. My doc will want me to increase, but the highest dose he will have me on is 1 pill (250 mg) per week.

I would have alot of difficulty with the dose you are on. Keep us posted with how you are doing with it. Good luck!

Here's everybody's update:

I lasted a whopping 3 doses and had to quit. It's taken me like 4 days to stop herxing for one thing - yellow stools again and SEVERE anxiety and teeth clenching with the Larium - pretty much immediately. I wasn't able to get to bed until 5am - and then only for 4 or 5 hours.

I think what the one poster said would happen was happening to me: severe depression - boo-hooing over everything, feeling like I wanted to throw something at someone but there was nobody around to target, feelings that everybody hated me.

I don't know what to do. My insurance would not approve the malarone. I didn't try to get the mepron, but I imagine my doctor ran that one by my insurance when he called them.

Is this older med dangerous because of additives in it? Or is it the psych symptoms. I seriously would rather my babs symptoms than be on Larium. I felt almost as horrible as I did one year ago after merely 3 doses. Maybe I'm just a wimp - I don't know.
