anyone know what's going on now? are they actually open as the opening in spring suggested, or are they perpetually in the "opening phases"? any updates?

I called the other day and they said the earliest they could see me would be November. (opened April 30th)

Sorry to say, it takes alot of time to do the type of research that I think they are doing.
Not to make excuses for them...but they have to spend alot of time fundraising; working on admin issues; publishing research can take a long time, and so on. I would bet that all the staff and investigators are working hard, though it would be nice to communicate that to the public, given the importance of their work.
At least, I hope they would take the time to update their website!! The breaking news section has news from 2005:
