Good job, Jay! -- I see that you've made a tremendous communication effort ever since the news broke about GW. I sure hope they take you up on your suggestions.

Couple comments: GS is a nurse practitioner, not a doctor. And Lyme disease is spreading all over the world; almost every country has it now.

JAY, i typed in the misspelled words in ALL CAPS and added ADDITIONAL COMMENTS IN ALL CAPS of thoughts you might provide.

also, how about showing the YANKEE ARTICLE, TROUBLE IN PARADIZE AT THE BOTTOM BEFORE SIGNING OFF.

you could also add about Dr. Jones situation making them aware of how hard it is for us to find a LLMD and especially a child's llmd and then Conn. Health Dept. making charges against him trying to take away his medical license. It's cost $1 million plus OUT OF POCKET to defend him.

thanks for ALL your efforts in writing all these folks; so GLAD you heard back from 1 of them. [group hug] [kiss] [group hug]

Good letter.

Wow I never knew GS had lyme.

I am glad you found out you had lyme. I knew someone else in Texas that was given an Elisa and so thought she had lupus instead. She was in the hospital more then once and not doing well last time I heard. I emailed GS and even got this woman in Texas a llmd to go to but I do not think she ever went.

When a doctor tells someone they do not have lyme even when you do if you do not know better you believe them. I am wondering if the person I knew is even alive anymore. She was so sick she had to return her foster daughter she was trying to adopt.

You go Jay!!! That is thrilling news that 60 minutes contacted you!

It is time the American public heard the true story of lyme and tick-borne diseases, not the IDSA insurance-industry propaganda!

Personally, I do not have the strength right now to write these letters to the media; the last two weeks have been bumpy. So I am thrilled to read about what you and others are doing!!! Thank you.

I'd never send this letter. Capitalization problems are glaring and look ridiculous, like not capitalizing Lyme. But who am I to say? If you got 60 Minutes attention with a previous letter, you should be successful again.

I'd tone down the message on Dubya. You don't know which side of the fence the reporter/investigator sits on.

Spacing/format problems drive me bonkers. I fax and snail mail important letters to avoid this.

Good luck.

My question is where did you get the info that 80% of lymies are women?? How do you know the majority of undiagnosed cases are NOT men then???

I didnt know ticks cared about that, they just want a host and we are IT!!! I do question the correctness of that statement,,,we dont NEED further bad info out there!!otherwise--just don--

Good work Jay. Be sure to mention the Columbia Ctr in NYC as we need to level the playing field against the other camp of acadenic MDs.

Stress the fact that the other camp has NOTHING safer or more efficacious to offer us yet continues to denigrate & marginalize our only options, lt abx & antimalarials.

Oh, I don't know...as much as we want it to be polished and professional, the grammar and typos give a good indication of the cognitive problems this disease causes.

If that's how they received the letter, don't sweat it.

I know many journalists who can't spell worth squat. They are used to it.

I think it's ok to provide the names of doctors, but only if they've given you permission to do so.

I mean we do want 60 Minutes to talk to those knowledgeable of our plight and not just anyone who claims to be an expert in Lyme.

Hi Jay!

Sounds GREAT!!!
I've been trying to work on some ideas for you, you can keep anything you like and disregard the rest. [Smile]

I don't know if this helps, but here goes....

quote:
(Altered)

Hi

This would be a good time for you to do a segment on Lyme Disease and it's treatment, with the recent announcement that the President of the United States has Lyme.

Lyme Disease would certainly explain his highly-criticized communication problems. One of the effects of lyme is difficulty in verbal expression. People experience problems with being tongue-tied, using similar words with different meanings, forgetfulness, etc.

The President clearly displays this difficulty
and has for many years.

If he was not treated within 30 days of his first infection and treated with the correct medicines he is probably going to get much worse before he gets better.

One of the most knowledgeable doctors about Lyme in the US lives in Austin TX, 80 miles from Crawford, where Bush was infected with Lyme.

Her Name is GS -- Google - - GS -
She was infected and recovered from Lyme herself, so she has first-hand experience with the disease. I am receiving treatment from her for my Lyme Disease.

I have contacted her and she OKed my giving you her contact info. She would like to do a interview with you, should you be interested. She has done many interviews and is quite good on camera.

An interesting statistic is that about 80% of Lyme suffers are women. The reason for this is still unclear.

Ginger's contact info:
--
xxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxmail.com
office ph # 415- xxx-xxxx
(It would be best to contact her via Email first.)

My Name is Jay BXXXXX
I got Lyme disease here in Austin Tx 20 years ago and became so sick before I started teatment that I was weeks from death.

Now after 2 years of good treatment I feel pretty good most of the time and am getting my life back.

I will do interviews with you if you want.
I am fairly well spoken now that I am in recovery. Two years ago I could barely talk (like George)

Lyme disease has been found in all 50 states and a lot of Europe and anybody can easily be infected. Just one tick bite and "YOU" become "ME". There are also other ways to contract it, besides being bit by a tick.

If Lyme is treated quickly after infection, it can be stopped fairly easily and relatively cheaply (approx. $100 medicine).

After about 30 days of untreated infection it becomes very difficult to recover.

I have spent about $50,000 on medicine in 2 years
to get as well as I am now. It was worth it even though I'm now broke.

There is controversy about treatment because of the high doses of antibiotics needed, often more than 3 times the normal dose, and length of necessary treatment. I, one of many, am proof that these doses do work.

I finally figured out that I have Lyme by seeing a TV program on the subject (It might have been 60 Minutes or ABC Dateline. I dont remember for sure). I consider myself very lucky.

20 years ago I had the bullseye rash on my leg, 3 weeks before I got really sick.

Though the years, 12 different doctors had no clue what was wrong with me. I had to figure it out myself.

Then I found Ginger and became one of her success stories. She had suffered with Lyme also and recovered. She is now swamped, treating other people.

I have spent the last 3 years studying Lyme and have become very knowledgeable about it.

I can supply you with high-quality contacts, doctors, further data, support groups and treatment info sites online.

My story is Very interesting and I am very representative of what most Lyme suffers have
to go through in order to get well.

I've had to do things like go to Mexico to buy medicine, that I couldn't otherwise afford, in order to get well.

I'd been misdiagnosed for many years, etc.

It has been hell going through this and I dont want anyone else to suffer like I had to.

I would love to share my story with you and will supply it on request.

Groovy,

Feel free to point them to the Public Health Alert website for resource information. www.publichealthalert.org

We keep PDF copies of all back issues online as well as a staff directory of articles. GS has a staff page and all of her articles are accessible as well.

Thanks,

Awesome, Groovy!

I'd love to see GS on 60 minutes! She's my NP, and I think she's the absolute best! I don't know where I'd be without her, but I suspect it would be in a wheelchair and completely disabled... that is where I was headed before I started treatment.

BTW, she isn't completely cured of Lyme... if she gets too overworked and stressed, she still has Lyme crashes.

This IS big news! I just hope the media doesn't spin it to look like W was treated with 10 days of abx (or one dose of doxy!) and is now "all better."

Jay,

I'm sure glad you are on top of this!
Very, very good work!

Taking advantage of this hot 'newsworthy' topic is really smart thinking!

Sure wish I was as brave as you are!

When I was first diagnosed with Lyme, I did some research on antibiotics in my PDR.

One manufacturer (I don't remember which one) was declaring that theirs was just as effective in treating acute Lyme as doxycycline: one year later 70% of the people showed no signs of Lyme disease.

That means that at least 30% of the people are potentially chronic cases. Scarey!

unfortunately, the president's high profile case can be used as "proof" that lyme disease does not have serious long-term consequences. since he was treated early, probably had the milder stari, and in any case, if he were to have cognitive problems, who would be able to tell the difference from his normal self anyways....

Lymetoo, it's my understanding that TX did not allow GS to practice there anymore, so she comes to California one week a month and works out of Dr S's office.

Dear Jay, Thank-you so much for your letter-writing campaign. It is people like you who get negative situations changed for the better. I must say that your letter to CBS did have some grammatical errors. However your passion was clearly conveyed in your words and you got the major points across and in good chronological order. My husband was bitten near Lake Erie almost 40 years ago. After spending a fortune on medical bills and being misdiagnosed too many times to count, he was finally diagnosed with lyme disease. Sadly he is now bed-ridden, so stiff he can't move, is on morphine from horrid pain. The good news is that his tremors have greatly been reduced, due to his treatment with diflucan. We are hopeful. Robby is very intelligent and verbal. He was wounded at the Kent State massacre on May 4th, 1970. Thanks again for your sincere desire to help our community of lyme soldiers. I am keeping you, your efforts, and all people involved in the lyme crisis in my prayers.

Lets stop bashing Jay for the grammatical errors - obviously CBS liked his letter anyway. Sheesh!

This was the important part. Lighten up, Vanilla. This is a new poster.

Thanks for the story, saskia. I do hope your husband improves significantly with treatment!

Thank you for pointing out the important part to me lymetoo. Could you please do that for me on every thread and then just send me a pm every once in a while about what exactly is happening on the board so I will know.

Perhaps you could put it in an org chart so it is easier to figure it all out. Opinions on one side of the chart and useless opinions on the other. The meat of the threads you could chart inbetween all the opinions and then put a pickle on the top.

Now I will be-able to give my guide dog the weekends off like he requested. I will have so much more free time on my hands to do my craft projects out of dryer lint and tooth picks.

My comment was not directed at only the new poster but to all the possums in this thread that found the need to comment on spelling or grammer. I know a college English teacher that mis-spells words in emails and they have yet to lock her up in jail. Of course maybe we should report her so they do. Granted she does not even have lyme disease and most people here do.

Maybe it would be nice just to celebrate the fact that Jay's letter was obviously heard by 60 Minutes and that he did a good job. That might just be the really important part of this whole thread but obviously who am I to judge? That was my point. Obviously you had one to make as well.

Excuse me while I get back to my craft projects and please please use spell check before sending me the org chart. If one word is mis-spelled I get all tangled up in my berka and I refuse to come out for days.

Oh and thanks for offering to fix my spelling mistakes in my last post - you seem to have deleted that offer but I hope it still stands.

Please do because you seem to have some extra time on your hands and busy hands are happy hands.

In fact if you could please go back and spell check all my old posts I would be beyond grateful. I went to a school based on Summer Hill In England up north from here on a farm. Stealing food out of the kitchen, growing veggies and chopping fire wood was a much bigger priority then spelling. We spent our days spinning wool and swimming at Sea Ranch.

My art college did not seem to be concerned much with spelling either. I guess I just have a giant glaring hole in my well rounded education and once again tutu it is nice of you to point that out to me so I will have something to feel inadequate about. I have yet to find the spell check button on this website and if I did my fatigue might make it difficult for me to use it. My fatigue has manifested since reading your comments. Before that I felt pretty good.

I am off to go take a nap in-between the rows of corn and sunflowers and I hope to heck the spelling police do not arrest me while I am out from under the bed.

Please consider telling 60 Minutes how important it is to save the children that are contracting this disease on a daily basis. By treating them properly NOW, we will save them a lot of future pain. Pediatricians are also not dealing with the disease correctly. We have to save the children. GOOD JOB ON YOUR BEAUTIFULLY CRAFTED STORY AND IDEA!!!!

Yes, THANK YOU.

Hope this will save many from such pain and daze.

I sent you a email, but got my phone number wrong. Sent a correction.

i used to teach journalism. i try to type right, as practice, but the message is what matters.

I applaud Jay for doing this. I keep thinking I'll write something that may help, but know that due to my endurance and ability to be concise with brain fog, .. well. He went ahead anyway.

Cheers!

I think the points in this article here in the UK makes some valid points:-

Bush and Lyme disease: what's the secret?
The White House won't reveal the length of the president's antibiotics course. Are they protecting the insurance industry?
