I have been herxing really bad on a combo of zithromax and ceftin to the point I can barely work. My wife called my LlMD for me and they said to take 4 days off antibiotics and take prednisone for 3 days, then start the antibiotics again.
I am a little worried because I know prednisone suppresses the immune system. Has anyone ever done anything like this? Thanks, Cornhusker

Actually, I have. I was in such intense pain I couldn't stand it. The worst pain was in my spine all the way up and down. Horrible.
Is it cortef that you're to take?? What dosage? I've heard others say that small amounts of prednisone and for short periods of time is OK....especially while on abx.
But I understand your concern!!!...and keep in mind....the decision is ultimately yours! It's YOUR body!

I am on cortef (hydrocortisone) at 5mg daily for adrenal fatigue.
I think that cortef is lower per milligram (steroid) than prednisone.
I've read somewhere here on this board that you can take upwards to 40mg of cortef a day
Before it significantly impacts Lyme.
Don't quote me on it though.
It has helped my blood pressure come up and has stopped some dizziness,
However, my joint pain is continuing and even slightly increasing at this point.
Good luck.

Antobiotics and prednisone is OK by many accounts (published and unpublished). In fact there is some speculation that it may actually help kill the dormant bacteria by reducing the immune response and allowing them to become motile so they can be attacked by antibiotics. I strongly suspect that it is the antibodies that force the bacteria into dormantcy, not the antibiotics. It may look like the antibiotics, but these drugs fragement the bacteria resutling in a hieghtend immune response.
Nothing is proven in this regard but there have been some animal observations to support this concept.

Thank you for your responses. It has helped put my mind at ease. I really deeply appreciate that I found this website and great people. It seems to be such irony that total strangers cand be more supportive than people that are close to you at times. Thanks, Cornhusker

I'm not sure what happened with me.
Before I knew I had Lyme, I was put on prednisone, and I could straighten my back for the first time. It was great!
The second time I was put on prednisone, again - before I knew I had Lyme - I don't remember it making that dramatic a difference either way.
The third time, however, I had some sort of mega infection and was placed on prednisone. I deteriorated rapidly and almost died. I am still not right today.
Wish I knew. I could use some steroids in my back right now myself.

the thing with prednisone and infection is that one has to be sure that the infection will respond to the anotbiotics that you are taking while on steriods. This has been tested with Lyme and and found to be OK.
On the other hand, taking predisone witn an infection and no antibiotics can be big trouble.
So why do you feel better with some infecitons after you take prednisone?
With some infections that are somewhat hidden to the immune system (intracellular infections for example), it is not the bacteria that causes the symptoms, rather it is the dead bacteria that are broken down by the immune system. These are so toxic that you get real sick. Prednisone mutes the response to this toxic residue and as a result you feel better.
Back in the 1980's it was "discovered" that if you treat a child that had bacterial menegitis that there was a high probability that the child would die from the treatment. The probability of death was as high as if they were not treated???? They figured out that the treatment killed the bacteria but junk that was left over was worse then the bacteria its self. The solution was to use steriods with the antobiotics. With this the survival rate increased.
This is the same as the herxhiemer reaction.
