Many things I have read state you get much sicker before getting better...is this to be expected?
How long do you normally go on IV before switching to orals?
Any experiences would be great to hear!

Some of us have had severe herxes from IV therapy.
What abx are you going to infuse?
Do you have any co-infections?

IV therapy is doable. You will probably feel ok after the first few infusions. About 2 - 3 weeks into it you may get slammed with a herxheimer reaction. This can be very uncomfortable. You may not feel like working or doing much more than watching the weather channel. My suggestion is to try to plan for that possibility. Alert your co-workers or clients and your friends and family. You may need help. Bottom line - make yourself comfortable.
You will not be able to lift too much or put pressure on the line. But, you can do plenty of other things. Take long walks, bicycle, do Pilates...... Just be careful.
You will have ups and downs and may even get to where you can predict your cycle of these. Make planning around down times an interesting project.
I did IV meds twice. I was functional. The infusions took about 40 minutes out of my day. I was tired after so, I tried to do them at night and then went to bed. I won't tell you that it was a piece of cake but, it was better than some of the oral combos I have been on. Flagyl comes to mind as one oral med that flattened me.
There is a lot of info here to help you out. Do a search. Take care.

I've been on rocephin for about 17 weeks now. It has not been an easy road, but I have continued to work the whole time.
I would try to let the people at work that you work most closely with know that you may get worse before you get better. I had to take a day off here and there and I took a week off about 1 month into therapy (just because I was due for a week off).
I'm getting ready to take another week off (another planned week off time) next week. I try to take time off regularly through the year because I need it. I'm not going anywhere, will just stay home and maybe do some small things locally.
It is doable. I would try to be prepared to have to take time off when you need to. That's all. many people take time off for various reasons, you will just have a different reason.
I hope it goes well for you.

I personally find IV Rocephin easier to handle then the other antibiotics I have tried. In my opinion IV antiobiotics have less side effects then orals. It is also not a big deal.
I have a PICC line and i infuse twice daily. It's infusion takes about 30 mintues and then you are done. The amount of time peopel stay in IV depends on how well you respond to therapy, how long you have been sick, and your doctor.
Hope everything works our for you, Lindsay
