Ok. I had a new symptom over the weekend and it really freaked me out.

I was trying on clothes & deciding whether a skirt was too short to wear to work. As i'm staring at my legs, I noticed that my left calf muscle is contracting or spasming. My right calf muscle was doing it too!

Usually when i have muscle twitches, I can definitely feel it. Also, my usual twitches are more localized. This appeared to be more "rolling". Also, if I wasn't staring at my legs, i would not have noticed the spasms!

This only happens when I'm standing up. No spasms when i'm sitting or lying down. This has been going on since Friday night. I called my LLMD this morning & waiting to hear back.

Has anyone else had this in both calves at the same time? Another new-ish symptom that might be related, is that my middle right side of my back feels kind of strange. Like a little numb, or that something is lightly touching it.

Arrg. I'm so frustrated with all this! I just want to be a normal 26 year old [cussing]

Let us know what your doctor says, and I hope this symptom clears up for you soon.

I had terrible cramping spasms the other night for the first time in my calves and I have upped my potassium and iodine intake the last few days (already take a lot of magnesium) and it has really helped. Hiker

Thanks for the replies & advice. I spoke with my doc yesterday & he didn't seem too concerned. (easy for him to say!)

He thinks the calf/muscle spasms are happening because of the Zithromax. (i just started it about 2 weeks ago - 500mg every other day on top of 300mg Doxy). Also, since it was happening in both calves he doesn't think it's nerve related.

He suggested taking magnesium oxide. I don't know. I'm not feeling particularly confident in his answer. I still want an MRI of my spine to rule out other things.

Does magnesium work right away? Or does it take a few days?

thanks!

If you do a search here, for magnesium in medical you will find tons of postings, including which kind of magnesium, how much, etc, people are using. Everyone seems to have a favorite. Most people with muscle spasms use it. There are degrees of spasms, tics, full charley horses, etc.

Magnesium oxide is at the bottom of the list though.

Many just keep it as a daily supplement. It takes a while to replenish what was depleted. I've been taking it for several years, 400 (about) mg now, but more earlier. I have read it is recommended that you also take a broad spectrum mineral as a base, so the others do not go out of balance.

Hello Thursday,

OUCH- I can so relate! This is a very painful symptom to try and get rid of.

Many suggested Mag for me also, but for some reason, my body has never been able to tolerate it at all.

I finally found a transdermal mag oil spray that helped a bit...but the cramps really didn't stop until I treated for awhile for Babesiosis.

You may want to speak with your doc about this possibility.

My best,
melanie

I've been getting this the last couple of months - I've been on Rifampin since January but just recently has this been an issue. It started with tight tendons/muscles behind my knee in one leg, now spasms in one or both calves when I wake up in the morning. Have to massage them to get out of bed.

I have increased calcium, magnesium and potassium.

Gosh, I hope it's not Babs, but that's the only TBD I haven't treated at all yet and know I have it.

Morgan,

Magnesium takes a while to work. I've been told to take at least 900 mg a day. You want to split the doses up though, or your body won't absorb it. And start low and work your way up. Too much magnesium causes diarhea. So stop just before bowel intolerance, and increase again when you are more used to it.

Another nutritional deficiency that can cause this is B-12. I was having motor tics, which are much larger uncontrolled movements of entire limbs as well as facial tics. They went away when I started taking large doses of B-12 with folic acid, sublingual.

I'm not a doctor, but I don't know what an mri would show in this case. I did have an mri when I was having motor tics, to see if there was something in my brain or on my spine causing the tics. But my tics were causing entire limbs to move in repetitive motion or my entire body to jump.

Definitely get some calcium and magnesium.

I began getting hand and foot cramps several months ago and bought a product called Mega Multi Mineral by Solaray. The cramping stopped by the second day!!

Welcome to my world. I have had muscle twitches in my calf muscles for 2 years along with burning skin & floaters in my eyes. LLMD says they are all neuro lyme symptom.

So far nothing has helped. The twitches get worse late in the day. Magneisum has had no effect.

I have read several other threads on this topic past 2 years. Try searching "muscle twitches" or "neuro lyme" in the search function. Good Luck
