I was perscribes Lexapro for nerve pain.

I took it one time, and it made me so nervous and VERY VERY VERY unconfortable. I fealt shaky and everything was very alien to me. That is the best way I can describe it.

This tends to happen to me anytime I take something that is for depression or any brain chem problems. When I was being treated for 'migranes' every med made me sick like this. For treatment of my 'fibromyalgia' i took that one that is used to treat alchoholics and fibro, and it made me so sick my friends were freaked out/worried because of how loopy i was. It made me completely and totally out of it.

Does this happen to anyone else? Or does anyone have any idea why this is happening to me?

I have such miserable nerve pain all the time, but I am afraid if i take it again, it will happen again, and the feeling is so bad I really do not want it to ever happen again. [bonk]

I was just wondering if anyone could give me an idea why this happends to me. I really want to find some help for my nerve pain. So i guess also if anyone else has had help with meds for nerve pain, if you could tell me what helpd you tha would be awesome too!
[Big Grin]
Hope all is well.

I used to take Lexapro for depression/anxiety. It made me feel that way the first two weeks and then the feeling eased off. So if you give it a chance, it might ease off for you too.

I mean it does alter your brain chemistry so no wonder it makes someone feel weird.

I no longer take it because once I started with the Lyme it made me feel weird again. So it might be something where Lyme and Lexapro aren't a good match.

Hi Skyler,

Sorry to hear about your new symptoms. I have been on Lexapro for five years now (treating depression/anxiety, unrelated to Lyme).

It has been a wonderful drug for me. I had no idea that it can help nerve pain too.

I just wanted to let you know that I've heard it can be quite common to experience jitteriness/anxiety/discomfort during the first few weeks of taking an SSRI. It was a long time ago, but I remember this happening to me. My sister also takes Lexapro and she experienced this feeling as well.

Unfortunately, I don't remember how long it lasted. It sounds like what you are currently experiencing is more severe than I went through at the time (without Lyme). I remember it as uncomfortable but tolerable. From what I've heard, the effects of SSRI's can vary very much from person to person.

Good luck-- I hope things ease up very soon.

Hey Sky.

My answer is to stay away from antidepressants if you can because they will only complicate Tx. This class of drugs is not as safe as the companies who make them would have you believe, and God only knows how or if they will reduce the effect of the abx combos that you are on.

Bottom line is that they are drugs just like abx that are in most cases hard on the liver. Some of them can cause liver damage all by themselves. The last thing that I want to do to myself is to take an additional drug that is going to put even more of a toxic load on my liver than the already 3 or 4 meds that I have to take.

Depression really isn't so tough to handle as long as you are aware of the reasons for it. It's a natural response to have it when dealing with all of this mess. The meds make you feel like crapola anyways, not to mention the psychological problem of dealing with having Lyme and coinfections. Just realizing what you are up against is depressing by itself. It's a lot to have on your plate at the same time, and sometimes it will seem like an impossible task. But it taint!

You might get used to the Lexapro over time, but I doubt if it will make you feel any better physically unless it decreases the effect of the abx, thereby reducing your herx. I've read a lot of posts from people that are taking antidepressants, and in most cases it doesn't help with the pain at all. It may take some of the depression away, but at what cost to your overall health?

There are a lot of different threads on antidepressants in the archives if you do a search on them. It might help you to make up your mind if you spend some time going over them.

The decision to treat depression with antidepressants is an extremely personal one.

No one can tell you whether or not you're "tough" enough to handle it on your own.

I would also disagree with the contention that depression is a "natural" response to one's life circumstances.

Clinical depression is distinguishable from the sadness or frustration that accompanies living with this disease.

I took lexapro in the beginning of my illness since the doc thought it was in my head. It made my heart palps worse so I only took it for a month. I do know a few people who are doing ok with it.

My lyme friend is taking something for neuropathy and his nerve pain is reduced. I will call him in the am and find out. I will get back to you.......Rich

Neuro had hubby take lexapro while we waiting for results of nuclear brain scan, blood work, etc. Said it wouldn't hurt him to take it. This was before we went to LLMD.

Lexapro was really horrible for my husband. He did nothing but sleep and felt much worse. He looked terrible.

If it helps you, great, but I know it was a bad thing for my husband.

Take care.

Hey Sky,

I dunno why he prescribed you that! That is an antidepressant/anxiety mendicine. Ask him for some Neurontin, it helps relieve nerve pain.
