Just looking for some feedback on side effects and / or comments on taking 500 mg of Flagyl twice a day. I will also be taking zithro (250 2x day)...but I am really worried about the Flagyl because I have heard so many (horrible) things about this drug. (Besides herx)

Thanks for helping!

Starting out Flagyl twice a day? I started out Flagyl once a week and built up to twice a week.

Within hours of the first dose, I was in extreme pain in every joint of my body. Vicodin didn't touch it. I was up the entire night. I had severe pain with every dose, but not always as bad as the first.

Depression big time. I had never had depression in my life. Very doom and gloom period for me. That was taking a sliver a day.

I started out at 1500 mgs a day for C-Diff. I could not scrape my body off the floor after the second dose. I had to go down to 1/4 of a 750 mg. tab a day and work up very slowly each day for 10 days.

Flagyl did not agree with me. But, everyone is different. If I had to take it again I would start out slowly and ramp up.

Several years ago, for 6 months I was on the same combo--zith and flagyl. I did not have a huge herx, or remember any huge pain problems. However, toward the end of that period I was almost zombie-like, as far as feeling able to do anything...even anything common like cooking dinner. (also no appetite) Looking back, I also must have been a real grouch, and felt the whole world was against me. (Thank goodness I have a husband and kids who managed to hang in there) It must have been depression--I didn't realized it as I had never been depressed before.

The other problem was that I developed "black tongue" from the flagyl--I think it was the flagyl as I have not had it from any other abx combo. If I had known about Theralac back then, perhaps this could have been avoided. Also, if I had realized I was depressed, some sort of mild anti depressant might have helped.

The good thing about flagyl---it got rid of almost every symptom I had ever had, except a tiny remnant of the vibration I had in my right eye. (the vibration in the face & eyes had been one of the last symptoms to go)

The bad news is that within several weeks, the symptoms started coming back. But never as bad as before flagyl. In fact, my current LLMD thinks perhaps we should do the flagyl again, as the bacteria load is probably so much lower now, and maybe it could finally knock it out for good. ( I have never done IV--flagyl was my choice instead of that)

At any rate, be sure to keep your LLMD informed of the side effects. At that time, I was flying to another city to see my LLMD, and just kept soldiering through it all until my next app't. I had been infected for six years before getting any lyme treatment at all, so you may have great success with flagyl.

Best wishes.

Ann
