I started zithromax 250mg (1 -2 tabs daily) a week ago. Started 1 tab daily for a couple days then 2 tabs(500gm).
A couple of days ago I started having loose stools and a lot of discomfort/tenderness on the right side of my abdomen(colon) so I cut back to 1 tab(250 mg) Is this dose going to do any good?
Initially I was on doxy 400mg/day for a month and had some neuro symptoms decrease. Then went to ceftin and symptoms started coming back. Now, the zith and I can't tolerate the 500mg.
I also take therlac and nystatin tabs plus my other ton of supplements. Liz

Zithromax and its cousin Biaxin both increase motility and give almost everyone loose stools, bloating, and abdominal pain of some kind.
I took 1000 mg of Zith a day for two weeks back in January, again in April, and then again in June. It took about a month after each round for my stomach to return to normal and that was with taking tons of probiotics. It was a pain but worth it for me because it really stirred up and killed something. I felt better each time.
As Cave76 said it has a long half life and stays in your system a long time compared to many other abx's. I felt the effects of it for a good week to 10 days afterwards.

Zithromax does have a long half life. The normal course of treatment for say otitis media is 5 days with a double dose the first day followed with four lower dose days. In comparison amoxicillin is given up to four times a day for ten days to accomplish the same treatment.

Patrick I don't know how you did the 1000mg a day. Dr. B's guidelines say 500-1000mg/day but my LLD ordered 250-500mg/day. I'm sure he knows what he's doing just looking for re-assurance I guess. Liz

Thanks Kitkat. I'm glad you felt the 250mg did you some good. I start flagyl after the zith. Since 250mg is all I seem to be able to tolerate I'll be on it a couple months. Hope you can tolerate the 500mg zith. Sounds like the ceftin did to you what the zith did to me. Liz
