I have been working up to my full dose of abx. and I finally hit it today. I am on amoxicillin(4000 mg/day) and doxy (400 mg day) as well as Nystatin.

Today, I felt sick to my stomach (figured it was the abx).

I have no neuro symptoms whatsoever and I have been having my other symptoms since June.

Today, while watching the kids play soccer, I started to feel my lips tingle. My nose and cheek started to feel the tingle as well. It went away. Now, on and off all day, parts of my face and my hands and feet have had the same tingle. It feels like "pins and needles" and I lose a little feeling. Like I said, it comes and goes.

Any ideas? Abx. side effect? Neuro symptom?

Lily

HI:

Doxy does that to me, can't take it because of the side effects. If your hands and feet and legs start to feel numb call the doctor its a side effect and can do damage to nerve endings. That drug is very hard on the body...

You're on really high doses. Sounds like a herx....but do keep an eye on the tingling and numbness, etc.

You might want to give your LLMD a call on Monday.

It sounds like a herx to me too, as I have constant hand, feet, tongue/lip tingling as part of my neuro-lyme symptoms.

The bacteria in the 5th/6th cranial nerve area (?) are getting stirred up by the large doses of abx. That is my guess.

But of course, it's best to check with your doctor since he or she may want to change your dosage.

There is a Doxy message board out there, not sure of the name. Or put in the drug name into google and it will show you sides effects of the drug. Again, It almost did perment damage to my nerve endings a few years ago for another illiness I had. And I was only on 100mg twice a day.

Nausea can sometimes be a symptom of elevated liver enzymes due to abx. You might want to ask your doctor if you should check enzyme levels.

Would you explain what it felt like?

Doxy can cause nausea. Eating enough when you take it can help.

But I agree, call your doctor.

Well, I've been on the abx. for 11 days. I thought a herx would be worsening of symptoms that I already had. So, since I have a lot of joint pain, I figured a herx might be additional joint pain.

Do I understand this correctly?

Would a new symptom be a herx as well?

Hmmm...I will definitely try to call the LLMD that I visited 2 weeks ago.

Hi Lily,

If you take 400mg/day of doxy (which I did also for several weeks), and sit in the sun, or get any sunlight on you, you can end up with a nasty sunburn.

When I was taking doxy and had any sunlight on my face, I had the same exact feelings that you describe in your post. They went away when I stopped taking doxy.

I have not heard of many llmds treating with doxy and amoxy at the same time.

Good call, Vermont. Sun and doxy don't mix.

Doxy and amoxy go for the same form of borrelia .... maybe your LLMD is concerned for coinfections that the doxy will hit.

Herxing can bring up new symptoms.

Yes, it happened again, today. We were walking around outside at the zoo. I had sunblock on but I forgot my toes (sandals). They got burned and they had a tingle. As well, my hands did, too (tingle).

I should probably avoid the sun all together. Still, easier said than done in Florida with three children!

Perhaps I just need a big straw hat, gloves and boots!

Borrelia has three forms -- cell wall deficient, spirochete, and cyst.

Amoxy and Doxy both go after the spirochete, whereas something like Biaxin/Zith goes after cell wall deficient, and Flagyl/Plaquenil go after cyst.

Also, what is unique about these two abx. being taken together? What is typical?

Hi Lily. Avoiding the sun when taking Doxy is a good idea.

Not only can the burn be severe even with sunblock, but with some people the heat of the sun can make their skin feel like it is burning from the inside out.

Make sure you read the pharmacy print-out about taking Doxy. Do not have any dairy, iron, or magnesium produts within two hours of taking it or it will not be absorbed properly. Do not lay down for at least an hour after taking it or you can ulcerate your esophagus. This is very painful. Drink a full glass of water when you take it for the same reason. It it makes you nauseous, eat something substantial and non-dairy before taking it.
