I get the most excruiciating pain in my right leg from my ankle and now expanding all the way up to my knee.

Like a charlie horse but in the front, over the peroneal nerve and corresponding muscles.

it is like the worst muscle cramp, pulling my foot to the side and the pain varies from an 8-10, waking me from a dead sleep.

my leg will feel tired the rest of the day but it seems to only happen at night, during sleep.

I feel it is part of a herx bc it is expanding where it use to only get my foot and ankle and part of my leg and only last a minute or so.

now it extends all the way into my knee and lasts for up to 10 minutes before releasing.

i am also getting more symptomatic in my elbows, NEW - dont ever remember that even in the past, both my knees, my other ankle, my wrist and one finger that kills me!

The pain is horrible.....it is getting to the point that I fear it wont release and is going to put me down, in the bed, completely.

Is this typical? Especially only at night? [Frown]

maybe its calcium/magnesium deficiency? try a mineral supplement with both and vitamin C to help it absorb.

I take Mega Multi Mineral by Solaray. It got rid of my hand and foot cramps in 24-36 hrs....never to return again as long as I take one every day.

If your not already,,,I agree with Roro and I think YOU need to try some calcium and magnesium.

It sure works wonders for me,,,takes a while to all kick in so dont jump ship for awhile after taking them.

IF you are already taking some,,,better inspect the quality,,,,ie,,,try a different brand. And for crying out loud,,,dont waste your money buying cheap Walmart brand either(store brand) cause that stuff IS worthless or worse!!

I use Citrical for calcium,,,the stuff with vit D in it. And GOOD magnesium from my pharmacy,,,ask for the BEST,,,doesnt cost MUCH more to go first class with THIS stuff!!(lots of junk magn. out there!!)

Otherwise see if a restless leg drug from your doc might help relax a bit. Another trick my daughter does is to take a couple tylenol just before bed time!! Helps her!!

Otherwise there is some powdered stuff you can take at bed time, that relaxes quite well...cant remember the name but if you need contact me and I will look it up!!being--just don--

To reduce the pain and help you sleep, I would ask your doctor about Zanaflex (generic is tizanidine). It's an antispasmadic that reduces pain and helps sleep.

As for cause, my first thought is that it is circulation related. That would explain why it is happening at night when you aren't moving your leg and it's level with your body.

It could also be muscle pain, and the lack of movement allows the muscles to stiffen at night. If that's the case, the magnesium is important as is making sure you are hydrated. Zanaflex will also help if it's muscle.

Can i go to the pharmacy and ask for better quality Mag? Is it rx?

Aniek

Zanaflex appears to be rx too is that correct?

Of important note on Zanaflex, warnings state DO NOT TAKE WITH CIPRO!!!!!! thought that was worthy of sharing [Cool]

Yes, zanaflex is prescription.

I actually was on cipro for a short period while on zanaflex. My pharmacist and doctor both said it was ok if I took them at least 2 hours apart. It's that they can't be metabolized in the liver at the same time.

But nobody should take both without talking to a doctor.

Two reasons.

Natural cortisol levels are lowest at night, especially between 1-6 am. Cortisol reduces inflammation.

Lymph system doesn't drain as well at night, when it can't use gravity and muscles are not moving.

Ouch. Some good pain management suggestions here.

ditto bejoy and ditto the calcium/magnesium suggestions.

Mag eliminated my leg/foot cramps completely.

Cj, your post asked why this happens at night. I was hoping someone might explain this.

My headache and stiff neck gets worse at night. Either can't fall asleep or stay asleep even with ambien.

Sometimes seems to start as soon as I lay down and wondering if it's because it's more pressure in that position.

Hope I'm not getting this thread off topic since I don't have the same symptoms as you. But I've wondered why this happens at night.

and crying almost everynight. it is rare i dont anymore, so it is just forefront, masks all the other pain, i guess, but it is all there 2.

hope the thread helped you!

cjnelson:
Are you taking or have taken in the last two years cipro or levaquin?
Those symptoms are identical to the ones caused by fluoroquinolone antibiotics. Same pain, same pattern of behaviour through the day.
Hope that is not your case and that it resolves soon.

Are you taking Potassium as well? Are you getting enough fluids? Dehydration can also cause the same symptoms, and I recall having this (although mine went down to my toes, and wrapped up to my sciatic area).

I had those symptoms too and was prescribed Quinine Sulfate for the muscle cramping but really helped me was making sure I had minerals every day. I took Multi-mins from Biotics. Whenever I'm on that it goes away. If I don't have any with my I try to eat some banana and it seems to work. Sometimes I think we feel more pain because it's easy to focus on right before sleep but I think it might have something to do with lying down. I seem to get ankle pain usually when lying down.

I've figured out that I have increased pain at night, after lying down to go to bed, because that's the only time my mind is clear enough to pay attention.

I try so hard to ignore everything and power through that as I am clearing my mind to get to sleep, my body reminds me that I am not as healthy as I would like to be.

It's just another thing I've had to learn to turn my back to.

AP is RIGHT. At night the outside stimulas surrounding us is quiet so our our pain is "enhanced". Really our its because our perception of pain is increased.

Got this explanation from my pain specialiast.

For nerve spasms...the tight locking kind I take 10 mg. Baclofen. Reg. muscle relaxer Flexeril for back spasms. Used to have to take vicoden.

I only need low doses of these two. 10mg and not every day.

Zanaflex didn't work for me. But I know some who love it.
