I only had this sensation once, and for a few
seconds ( in my head a few days after I got
infected) , but I was deeply disturbed by it and am
wondering if anyone knows what causes it.
It is just nerve misfirings due to damage, or what?

I've had the vibration sensations, but it was all over and not just in my knees.
Hubby too.
In both our cases, I am sure it was neuro sx from LD or the coinfections.
Has now resolved with treatment, but sometimes when I am very tired it comes back slightly

I have it too. I call it "buzzing". Currently, my left leg and especially the hip are a problem. Seems to be related to the Sciatica also. Wakes me up at night and I have to stretch, stretch, stretch to make it calm down.
Gigi has talked about buzzing or vibrating being the cause of toxins moving about the body, but this has not moved alot, so I wonder. It does get better with treatment. Mine got better on IV Rocephin (much better), but when I switched to Bicillin shots it came back. Before, bicillin took care of it in time, so I am hoping the same happens this time.

That was one of the symptoms that bothered me the most, after I had conquered the pain and until I understood the necessity for binding agents and other supporting therapies.
I learned that my vibrations were brought about by the retention of neurotoxins, toxins on their way out, toxins that have not made it out, toxins that are still in circulation trying to find another landing, depending on the stage of disease you are at.
The binding agents are, in my opinion, the most important thing that many people are missing. Whatever agent you are taking to kill -- does do only that, kill; then you have to have the right agents on board to move the dead bodies and residuals/including metals out. I have posted the list of binding/mop-up agents many times.
The binding agents and support treatments are as important, if not more so, as choosing the right killing agents.
I approached Dr. K. many times about this "vibrating of my quilt above me during the night", sometimes the whole body, sometimes only certain regions of the body. He responded in German to me and I will translate as good as I can: "The sense of vibrating is caused by certain receptors in the skin, the next layer below (Unterhaut), and the connective tissue. If the receptor has been excited by normal stimulus or abnormal stimulus, such as neurotoxins, we then sense it as vibrations.
Most detoxing takes place at night. Certain organs are more active at certain times. Do learn about the meridian organ clock. I have posted it recently. I have posted it several times before. People seem to ignore it.
Binding agents start with food - real whole food. (I don't buy at Wholefoods! that store scares me! and my "retired folk" wallet)
I learned during my whole ordeal to think "fiber" whenever I put something in my mouth called food.
That's how I came up with my fruit/veggie mousse mush. It covers a lot of territory starting the very first thing in the morning. You are what you eat - and I can promise you - it's not vitamin pills. The less you do of that and the more you do with real food, the better off.
The only exception for us is a huge supply of minerals. You cannot detox anything without covering the mineral base. And these are no longer in the foods we grow today - organic or not - it has to be supplemented with the best available and, most important, absorbable minerals.
Take care.
Just sharing my experiences.
