I have an old physician friend in florida who is the first one to mention the possibility of lyme to me. However, he is an anesthesiologist and does not know much about the treatment.
I want to do a trial of antibiotics and retest, or see if I show any improvement in symptoms.
I'm not sure of oral dose or how long to try. Experts help me out here. It looks like 200mg BID for a month, but I'm not sure.
Let me know what you think. You can PM me. I just want to give it a try and see if I show any improvement. I don't think it could hurt or hinder me while the docs are stll looking for other possible diagnosis for what this is affecting me.
Some of you know what I was talking about last night on the chat board. Which by the way, my computer internet messed up and booted me off and I couldn't get it to sign back on. Weather in Alaska is unpredictible with DSL.

I weigh 125 pounds and took 200 mg. twice daily.
My daughter is 100 pounds and takes 100 mg. three times daily.
I would suggest calling IGeneX and seeing what they recommend.

I am not up on current suggestions.
However, if you also tested positive for ehrlichia, the dosage for doxy used to be 600mg a day for 2 months - but that was several years ago - and if my memory serves me.
Also, if you take an anti-spirochetal drug you may also have to take an anti-cyst form medicine, too as lyme can change forms during treatment. Different drugs are required.

I think the 'recommended' range is somewhere between 300-600 mg a day. The length of time is a minimum of around three months or so. But nothing is written in stone and you also have to take into account if there are coinfections.
One of the things to keep in mind with doxy is that it can be hard on the system. I didn't tolerate it all that well - made me throw up. What did work better was doryx which is the time released version of doxy. Insurance companies are a bit more fussy about approving doryx because doxy is cheaper, but with the right recomendation from a doc, it can be covered. cootiegirl

If it were ME, and it's not, I would do 400mg of doxy per day for one month, then go off for 2 wks and then retest.

If I recall correctly...
I think the doxy dose is 100mg per 50 pounds.
At 150ish (ok, on a good day) I'd need at least 300 mgs. (I think that would be low end.)
I believe Doxy is bacteriastatic at 200mg and bacteriacidal at higher doses.
This part I do know about. It can be tough on your stomach and most say take it with food. For me, it still felt like it was burning a hole. The Doc told me to take it an hour to 1 1/2 hours after a meal and let it ride out of your stomach faster as the food gets digested. Surprisingly, that did help.
I had no trouble tolerating the Doryx but it's like 20 times the price. It worked great when I had prescription coverage.
edit: duh! I just reread your post and you said 200 bid... yeah, that's good. Sorry so spacey.

There's also Monodox which is like Doryx I think- a version of time release doxy that is easier on the stomach!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dr. B's guidelines say 300-600 mg/day. I take 200 mg BID, with food.

I take 300mg (one in am, two in pm) a day.
I weigh 105lbs.
It has to be at least 300mg to cross the blood-brain barrier.

I would ring up Dr. Harris at IGeneX.
I'd say "Yo Dr. Harris. I'm looking to get a stronger positive blot -- not necessarily to treat -- with a short run of doxy or something like it. What's the optimum dose/time frame before re-testing?"
He is absolutely the NICEST guy there is. If he's around, he's easy to get on the phone right off the bat. He might even ask about the fly fishing in Alaska!!!
He's going to be the best source of info for "x number of weeks on X mg per day, then x number of weeks clear, then retest."
I think everyone here is pretty darn close (my guess was 400mg per day of doxy for 10 days, then wait 2 weeks and test.)
But I would go STRAIGHT TO THE HORSE'S MOUTH!!
800-832-3200. Ask for Dr. Nick Harris (he's not a treating doc so we can say his name here.)
Good luck Tamera!! You are going to educate Alaska!!

That is exactly what I did and my WB lit up like a Christmas tree.
But I also agree... Call Dr. Harris and ask his opinion.

Yes, at least 300 mgs to cross BBbarrier. I take 400, not based on weight but on the place we arrived at where my symptoms seem mostly controlled. Started on 200mgs, moved up. My LLMD has said that in the 5-6 range (which many certainly need) you more easily fall prey to abx side effects.

I'd do 200 mg doxy BID, taken in the middle of a substantial meal. Both my husband and I got nausea if we took it away from food. Even 5 minutes before food! But you have a little window after food, if you go out to dinner and forget to bring your doxy.
BTW, my husband didn't get much better on that dose of doxy for 4 months, but he thinks he's getting better on our current regimen (Biaxin, plaquenil, pulsing with flagyl.
Do get retested like Lymetoo said.

I vote for AT LEAST 400 depending on how much you weigh. And I am NOT asking THAT question!!! Just follow Trueblues formula.
