Mr Moore does a good job in showing how countries that are not as "rich" as the United States have better mortality rates and better overall healthcare.
With my medical bills starting to pile up to the point where I may need to do something drastic. It made me sad to see that if I were a Canadian I would possibly have gotten better treatment for free.
If you haven't seen this movie I suggest it. Perhaps we can get Universal health care passed with a democratic president and congress. One can only hope.
Hoping everyone a better day.

If my mind hadn't flown away with the Mepron, I'd love to engage more in depth on this topic....
In short...
I agree that our current system is in dire need of repair. I feel that we are at some kind of a breaking point. Being a Lymie has only made it more personal.
I'm not sure a pure 100% single-payer system is the answer-- Canada et al are not w/o their own health care problems (long waits for tx, etc.)
But I agree that the US system is an utter mess. Esp the mass #'s of uninsured Americans.
Maybe one day when my mind is more clear I'll actually spend some time reading and comparing all the candidates' health care proposals.
I briefly scanned Obamas and I think he has some great ideas for getting the uninsured covered at least--
Again, my mind's a jar of putty, though, so for me I'll save this conversation for another day.

Trust me - the medical system in Canada stinks. You would not want to live in Canada and contract a mystery disease such as Lyme.
At least here in the US, if you can pay for it, you can get whatever treatment you want. Not so up in Canuck-land. Up there you're left to travel abroad to save yourself.

In 1993 the proposed socialized medicine had a lot of doctors QUITE concerned... it was greatly feared that ANY provider practicing outside the system would be PROSECUTABLE! IE, cash and carry medicine could land them in Jail.
That scenario would leave many Lyme Patients without ANY recourse. Do not kid yourself; limiting care is the only way it will work.. or does work in other countries. NIH and CDC will likely end the existence of LLMDs or force them into becoming full blown BACK ALLEY Medicine Providers.

YANIVNACED, I worked closely with a doctor for several years who was from Canada. She had been the Personal doctor for one of the former Prime Ministers... while he was Prime Minister!
To put it nicely she said practicing in Canada was like throwing "crap" on the wall and seeing what stuck". She had nothing good to say about their system.
If you are a mom with a kid with the sniffles it might be great ... but if you have something WRONG with you... you'll need cash for care and cash for travel to a place you can get that care.

Right now, here is the US, we have a system of universal health care for all those above a certain age that works pretty well. It's called Medicare. It costs less per person, even the elderly, than our most expensive by a factor of two/37th in the world (behind Albania for God's sake!)for longevity and infant mortality system we have now. I see no reason why it couldn't be expanded to cover everyone.

Not true. I live in Canada and I have lyme. I did have to travel to the US to see an LLMD, but that cost was only $250 for the visit. My Rheum here is prescribing all my meds and I don't have to deal with any greedy HMO. I get ALL My abx for free. I got an MRI in 2 weeks, I get my dr's appointments within a week. I can get whatever treatments I want? What treatments can't we get here?
Sure, our system is not perfect (no ones is), but I can tell you, after seeing Sicko and hearing horror stories from my family that live in the US, I am sure glad I'm sick in Canada. I don't have to pay for ANY medical treatments.
Sicko should be a huge eye opener for Americans. The movie shows how imperfect the US system is and we all know Americans hate to be told how imperfect they are.

That's probably because she was making triple her salary in the US. What does that say? The medical system in the US is all about the all might $ and not how healthy the citizens are.
And cash for care? What, do think this is a 3rd world country? Cash for what? We have some of the best health care in the world! Geez...research before you make a comment like this
