Adamm, I take the Ultra Flora Critical Care, which has 50 billion flora in the right mix for both small and large intestines.
I also always have another brand and switch them off, just in case one has lost strength thru handling. I haven't found a second favorite yet, and have been using different ones.
I don't have any problems from taking the high dose abx, but then, it's only been a few months.

Theralac, once a day. However I started at a higher dosage. Talk to them about how to start with Lyme.

Solaray Multidophilus 12. For me, more important than the type or brand is that they are in enteric coated capsules. The non-enteric coated varieties do nothing for me.

My ND says I need various types of probiotics but insists I always make sure to have Saccharomyces boulardii on board.
Only Saccharomyces boulardii and, to a lesser degree, L. casei rhamnosus (GG) have been shown to protect against C. difficile.
S. boulardii is a unique probiotic in that it is known to survive gastric acidity, it is not adversely affected or inhibited by antibiotics . . . however, antifungals should be taken hours apart. see note at bottom of post. I suppose allicin, olive leaf extract and other supplements that have an anti-fungal nature fall into this category, too.
A) No, Florastor is not really like acidophilus but they are both probiotics. Florastor is non-pathogenic (good) yeast, not a bacterium like acidophilus.
Saccharomyces boulardii lyo has been studied by many researchers over the past 50 years.
Florastor and the capsule are gluten free.
Q) Florastor has Lactose and I am dairy sensitive, can I still take Florastor?
A) Yes. There are no milk proteins found in Florastor. However, it does contain lactose monohydrate in a very small amount. Many lactose and dairy sensitive patients have reported good results while taking Florastor. As with any product, be sure to consult your health care professional first.

Excerpt:
Only Saccharomyces boulardii and, to a lesser degree, L. casei rhamnosus (GG) have been shown to protect against C. difficile. . . . ============================
Saccharomyces boulardii is a non-pathogenic yeast that is recognized to have probiotic effectiveness used alone and/or in combination with other probiotics to support digestion. It usefulness was discovered by a group of French physicians investigating intestinal issues.
DESCRIPTION/CHARACTERISTICS
Saccharomyces boulardii is considered a non-pathogenic, non-colonizing baker's yeast species, which is very closely related to brewer's yeast also known as S. cervesiae. The S. boulardii, although it is recognized as a yeast, is not related to the Candida species (Candida albicans, tropicalas, etc.), which can cause pathogenic infections in the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts.
S. boulardii is a unique probiotic in that it is known to survive gastric acidity, it is not adversely affected or inhibited by antibiotics and does not alter or adversely affect the normal flora in the bowel. For this reason good friendly probiotic organisms (including Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium) can be taken at the same time as S. boulardii.
For optimal results it is recommended that the capsule be taken between meals, on an empty stomach, with un-chilled water. Each size #3 Vegetable capsule contains 3 billion CFU (colony forming units).
. . . Do not take the S. boulardii supplementation at the same time as any prescription antifungals like Nystatin, Diflucan, Sporonox, etc. Antifungals are recognized to kill S. boulardii and thus should be taken at a different time of the day (separated by 2 to 3 hours) as is recommended by the physician.

The guy who has the lyme caht on Saturday night sells the PB8 at a lower cost if you can order more than one at a time.
For now, I am purchasing mine at the local grocery store in the health food section

kam...Just an FYI... I took PB8 the entire time I was on Lyme treatment.. 4 yrs.
Not until I found Theralac did I find out that PB8 was useless. [at least for me]
You may want to rotate with another brand to see if the 2nd one works better than the PB8. I know Theralac is pricey...but it's not that far off the price of the others when you consider how many pills you have to take of the others.
It costs about $1 per pill for Theralac.

Even before I started on abx a few months ago I was prone to yeast infections. I would get at least a few a year.
Theralac seems to be the only thing that has done the trick. I try to take 2 a day, but it doesn't always happen, simply because I take the abx 3 times a day and it's tough to schedule.

p.s. to Keebler- just fyi Saccharomyces Boulardii- I swear by the stuff-good stuff but it can become a systemic infection in itself- repetitively documented as pathogenic in that regard-just fyi-you can overdo it!! Wish it wasn't so_!!! Best wishes, S.

Currently I am taking the following probotics ... my needs change ... some abx seem to cause more yeast issues than others for me. Currently this combination seems to be working for me.

I just eat yogurt every day. The plain kind with no added sugar, but it does contain splenda. Is this the wrong thing to do? is it enough? I'm not currently n antibiotics, but definitely have a lot of joint pain. I have been trying to control everything by diet, but a recent move and new job and new baby has added a lot of stress, which may be why I'm relapsing.

I take sedona labs professional strength iflora (you can get it on Dr. Hulda Clark's site). It was recommended by my LLMD, and I also like it because it's shelf stable and doesn't need to be refrigerated.
4 a day.
It's very expensive stuff, but so far, thankfully, I haven't had a problem with yeast.

systemic yeast infections are very common w chronic lyme patients.
what you need to do to avoid this is:
-take probiotics as much as you can. take 1-10 (you cant over dose on probx) -make sure they have 20 billion or more strains -make sure you take them 2-4 hours b4 or after, preferably after. -maintain optimal oral hygiene. brush your teeth, use floss, tongue scraper, and mouth wash 2x day)
you can also consider adding in diflucan or nystatin if your yeast gets bad.
a good way to determine the way the resy of your internal organs looks is to look at the back of your tongue.
most people with lyme and on abx have a small amount of oral thrush, it only becomes a concern when u have sever yeast symptoms, usually confirmed by an increase of oral thrush.
good luck
