I am limited on time and energy.. so please excuse the format below.
Thanks for helping!!!!

Beverly...
Insurance companies are not forth coming with any help from what I have noted over the years. They avoid answering any questions like the plague.
Sooooooooooooooooooo.. we need to dig a bit deeper than normal.
Topic- Amount spent on Lyme and other TBD's from any insurance reports you might locate.
Tip- I managed to pull some documents in Maryland when the idiots were trying to write state bills to curb our treatment due to costs.. so perhaps looking at bills in states with Lyme disease might help? (I am focusing now on Maryland first as this is the first one due... but we may need to go with national figures?)
Idiots have to tell all to get bills passed to deny us.. so looking at "bills" may be a start. This is a TOUGH topic... hope you are ok with it?
THANKS!!!

Aniek...
First of all- I would like to use your wonderful "report" as an attachment to the project... Appendix A, B, or C. Might that be possible? Or.. if online.. at least use it as a reference source.
As for charts... THANKS!
1. Chart showing the increase in Maryland's reported cases from 1980 through the end of 2007. If too big a project for for one page.. then from 1997- 2007 (the past ten years).
2. Using the figure of $500,000,000 per year for what Lyme and TBD's cost Maryland residents... a projected chart showing that figure over the next ten years.. in relationship to the increase in numbers of reported cases for the past 10 years.
Clear as mud?
Bottom line.. I need to see how much it is going to cost Maryland over the next 10 years for Lyme and TBD patients.
3. A chart showing how BAD the CSTE criteria are and how many cases are missed due to their use. I'm open to your ideas here.
4. If Lyme tests are done as directed by the IDSA guidelines.. minimum of 2 postive tests in order to be treated (ELISA and follow up Western Blots if ELISA is positive)... with their recommendation to do additional tests later...
At a cost of whatever an ELISA and Western blot costs these days.... how much is spent on CRUMMY lab tests each year in Maryland that miss up to 90 percent of those infected. Use the 2007 figures for total reported cases (estimate 2,400?) X the 10-fold CDC assessment. We need to add in an estimated number of tests for those who are just plain old negative on the first ELISA too.
Can this be done?
THANKS!!!

Walnut.. good for YOU! I am sitting here with my head swimming. No can do that at all.
Ok..
Using the chart below.. and we are working on Maryland first as that is where the first project will be needed to be used... then we will share the results with other states so their figures can be "inserted".
So looking at the chart...
1. Percent of increase in reported cases since 1980. Then from 1980 to 1990. Then from 1990 to 2000. Then from 2000 to current.
2. Percent of increase in reported cases from 1997 to 2007.
3. Percent of increase from 2006 to 2007.
4. If it cost $500,000.00 to treat TBD patients in Maryland annually now.... how much will it be in 10 years at the growth rate we just had in one year?
How much for 20 years... do you do inflation estimates?
How much for 50 years and 100 years?
**
I KNOW I need more figures worked up... but need to take a break and lose this head ache right now.
If.. when reviewing this info.. you see any other "neat-o" or "cool" comparisons or figures that could be used.. please feel free to work them up too.
One big thing I need using this chart is that per capita thing? I have no clue how to figure that... but our figures should show a higher rate for 2007.
If that can be compared to one from 10 years ago... or there abouts.. that would be great too.

Walnut.. this Bud's for you...
"In 2005, Maryland reported an incidence of 22.1 cases per 100,000 population compared with a nationwide incidence of 7.9 cases per 100,000 population. The disease burden of LD is clustered in the northeast and north-central regions of the US, and 2005 incidence rates in some states have been observed to be as high as the Delaware rate of 76.6."

Hi I am working on going after the wonderful tests statistically right now. I am on day 20 of the IV Rocephin and my cognitive skills are improving ...although slow. I can also try to help you if you send me the stuff and need analysis. I am normally a graduate professor when I am not suffering from LYME
I probably cannot search right now until I get a little better.

Tincup,
Do you have the numbers to put in the charts you mentioned?
If yes, I can work on the charts. But right now I don't have time to do the research and get the numbers.
If somebody else can do the research, I can do the charts.
Or else I need 2-3 weeks.
If you have any data, you can email it to me, or pm me if you can't email.

Except for the cost of a Western Blot or ELISA.. which I don't have off the top of my head. But the link will get you started till I can find out the cost of the tests for the last chart.
THANKS!

Thanks for the offer. Hope you and others feel better soon.
I am sure I will need more help in the next few days and/or couple of weeks as we make some progress and I put things together... so please do check back.

NOTE to all-
I don't do PM's, Instant Messages, or the like due to neuro stuff. Tried them once years ago and like the jitterbug, it plum evaded me.
In addition.. my emails are messed up. So.... for this project we will need to do it here if you don't mind.
Any drawings or charts that are completed you can let me know and then we can figure it out.
But for now this is the best way for me to keep in touch.
"(7) According to studies, Lyme disease costs our Nation between $1,000,000,000 to $2,000,000,000 each year in increased medical costs, lost productivity, prolonged pain and suffering, unnecessary testing, and costly delays in diagnosis and inappropriate treatment."
(11) According to the General Accounting Office, over the past 10 years, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has only increased its allocation for tick-borne research and education by 7 percent, from $6,900,000 to $7,400,000. Over that same period, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's expenditures for infectious diseases rose 318 percent, from $70,800,000 to $296,000,000.
(12) According to the General Accounting Office, over the past 10 years, the National Institutes of Health have increased expenditures almost every year, from $13,100,000 in fiscal year 1991 to $26,000,000 in fiscal year 2000.

Beverly...
By NO means did you let me down!!! This was a super tough one. Had it been easy.. yep.. I'd have done it myself and it wouldn't have taken any time at all.
So don't feel bad!!! This is more than I had and more than I expected because they like to hide stuff so the public doesn't use it against them.
I once mentioned some insurance figures I had gathered while at a duck meeting... and one big duck and a second one both quickly gave me that.. "evil eye" and one snapped, real nasty and said...
"WHERE DID YOU GET THAT?"
You'd have thought I stole the recipe for Kentucy Fried Chicken or something. Geeze guys.. get a grip!!!
But this looks good and I will use it as I can in the project. Sooooooooooooooo..
TANKS Beverly!!!
For your time and effort and caring.
PS.. I was thinking about you earlier. The warmer weather has brought out the flies.

TC -
I failed you. I was really tired yesterday evening and then woke up with a cold today. And I never got to the project amidst all my studying and dealing with this darn cold. Can you wait a few more days for the charts?
So sorry.
