Wondering if Lariam has helped anyone overcome babesia?
I took my loading dose of Lariam and had a wopper of a herx. Oh me oh my. I'm getting desparate to treat this babesia.
Tried Mepron, zith, art for 5 months did nothing. Tried clinda/quine and the head ringing was relentless. Then tried Alinia and did not seem to really do much.
Does not seem like many people have done Lariam. Just looking for support.

I also did 8 weeks of it...Killer headache from day 1 till 3 weeks after stopping it. Wouldn't ever take it again - although I did see improvement in energy , vertigo, and chills after my head stopped pounding. I think of everything for babs I liked malerone the best. I tried to tell myself it was crossing the b/b barrier - but I think it's just 1 of the possible side effects of the drug. It's on my allergy list now.
My next attempt to kill em off is going to be cryptolepsis, as per Buhner's. Been putting it off till after the holiday's & another oral surg, since I usually herx in the mouth/jaw w/ babs TX - regardless of which 1 it is.

I was on Mepron, Biaxin, Artemisia for 9 months. Now I'm on 1 Malarone, Lariam every five days, and Artemisia (with other drugs for other things).
I would feel horrible, like I was intoxicated, when I first started the Lariam. It doesn't do that now.
The other day I woke up in the middle of the night and was hot, I took the comforter off and went back to sleep. It was the first time in years I was not soaking wet when hot at night!
So, I think it's really working! But the Mepron really beat it down first.

I don't think Larium by itself will help oversome the Babs. From what my doc said the Lairum kind of holds the Babs in check and you have to take other things with it. I took it once a week for about 6 months. I took Mepron and Zithro and ARt with it and then Art, Plaquenil,Malarone and Inderal with it(stops malaria from entering red blood cells). Babs was still there and now I am on CLindmycin and Quinine as a last resort. The Larium just caused me to always be weepy a few days after taking it. But that's it. They say you can have bad dreams with it- I had only one the whole time on it.

I took lariam with doxy for 5 months. It didn't eradicate the babesia, but I made tremendous progress on lariam.
I have been undergoing treatment for babesiosis for 4 years, and Lariam is the only medication I have taken, on which I would actually have symptom free days.
Do you have the west coast strain of babesia duncani (WA1)?
From my casual observations and my own experience, it seems that mepron is not very effective in treating B. duncani (WA1), and lariam seems to work better.

Walnut, I'm not sure which strain of babesia I have as it has not showed up on 2 different Igenex tests. LLMD treating based upon my symptoms.
I have been taking zithromax along with all of the other babesia meds. I have been on abx for almost 11 months and feel worse the last couple of months.
The lariam is really difficult and I don't know that I will be able to tolerate the herx.
Just feeling really aweful and low lately.
