hi
I tan at a salon. I have a yearly unlimited membership.
the light and heat is comforting and restful. the bronze color of my skin makes me look healthier than my pale sickly look.

sweating out toxins
light therapy for depression symptoms
I use the time for deep breathing and meditation (helps with anxiety)

I've had NO issues with the picc line other than mild itching because of the bandage and sweating. I'm almost into my 3rd month of IV 2x daily

That's the weirdest recommendation I ever heard coming from a doctor. What does he want you to gain from it? Vitamin D? Can you get that from a tanning bed?

Due to skin damage issues, I would opt for supplementation. You may want an infrared sauna for warmth, sweat and comfort. It's deeper penetrating and healthier than UVB and UVA rays.

My opinion, it's YOUR doctor.

Yikes, I'd stay away from the tanning beds!

Have you thought about getting a light box?

I have seen some on ebay for decent prices.

Not sure about the benefits, but I have read they are very helpful for many people.

Apparently they replicate the effects of the sun - without damaging your skin.

Just a thought!

what is an LLDS?

if you are so sick you need a PICC then you are too sick to worry about your tan, IMO

My LLMD is telling me to go get a tan from Oct to Mar for the Vitamin D. I haven't done this yet as I'd rather spend money on a full body massage and a trip to Phoenix. But I am using a Blues Buster bulb.

All you need is 10 minutes in the sun to get your Vitamin D for the day. 10,000 IUs just in that time frame.

My daughter supplements 3,000 IUs orally.

Oh,,, what is a LLDS. I know the LL part, but what is a D.S. ?

I have concerns over the safety of regular tanning beds regarding skin damage - . . . and safety from the microbial aspect and from the chemical exposure from the stuff they have to spray each time for a new person. that stuff is toxic and may not kill off bacteria or viruses that the previous person might leave.

For someone with a PICC line, that might pose a risk.

===================================

Vitamin D3 good quality supplement would be more accurate.

in northern areas, the sun this time of year does not give a lot of vitamin D and you need exposed skin for that anyway. Tenn. might on sunny days, though. True it does not take alot of time for the Vit. D. And much has to do with some sunlight into the eyes, too. Not looking at the sun, but just with eyes open to the daylight.

the Blues Buster bulb sounds interesting.

-------------------------

Infrared portable heater. don't think this would give Vit. D, but it is very nice. I am drawn to the light, although I am light sensitive. this is deflected but clearly a nice glow that lights up the body.

800-734-0405 about $90. has a remote. (I am not connected with company in anyway.)

I love my new infrared heater. It's quiet, sets up to couch height and rotates. I love the roundness and reflected light - like the sun to me. It really does have good light.

Sun is best, but during the cold and rainy months, this heater warms my bones and gets me sweating a little.

How much vitamin you will get from a tanning bed will depend on the make of the bulbs, some produce more UVB than others, so it's possible to get alot of D but also very little. Do not go for a tan, in fact, the tanner you get the less vit. D you will make because the UVB has to penetrate the melanin layer to convert cholesterol to cholecaciferol (vit. D). Oral supplementation helps too, but if you live anywhere north of a line from Philly to San Fran, you won't make a significant amount of D from sun exposure from November to February. Vitamin D is important in Lyme treatment because it helps with proper differentiation of immune cells. Make sure, if you orally supplement, that you do so with Cholecalciferol and not with Ergo-calciferol, the former is what we make naturally from the sun, and the latter comes from a fungus and has about 25% the potency of the former. If there are any LLMDs out there not checking 25 Hydroxy vitamin D levels as part of the diagnosis and treatment plan, they aren't doing it right...

Dr. Mercola is now recommending two specific tanning beds that he considers to be safe .. of course, he also sells them, but I'm sure you could find the same ones from another source. Here' is the link to his article. http://products.mercola.com/tanning-bed/

Isn't there a video on the Canlyme site that shows ketes melting with UVA or UVB light? Would that be the same as tanning beds?

I recommend covering the external picc apparatus with foil, UV light may cause a chemical reaction in the plastic, or at the least and maybe the most, cause the plastic to deteriorate faster...but the same could happen with sunlight.
