At my request my doctor checked my ammonia level through a blood test. I had asked it to be checked because I have the most toxic taste in my mouth and thought that perhaps elevated ammonia levels were responsible.
My results are high and I know she probab;y won't know what to do. Has anyone checked their levels and if high do you know what it means. Thanks!
I am presently on no antibiotics.

I don't know what it means so am bumping this for someone that does.
My first thought is to ask how your liver function tests are.
I don't recall ever being tested for ammonia.
I "think" it has something to do with how the liver converts waste products and then the kidneys.

Nice discussion with links to related articles:
After reading the articles suggested it seems that excess ammonia in the blood can come from many places-bacteria in the GI tract or poor liver function.
I think that the more tests I take the more confused I am.

Try eating asparagus. At one time I think my ammonia levels were high because asparagus was one of my safe foods and is said to remove ammonia.
I can't eat asparagus now though, so maybe my levels dropped.
I think these bugs give off ammonia when they die.

I noticed had a very distinct body odor which smelled like ammonia. So in my search I found ornithine was a method to remove ammonia. So I looked further and started reading on ornithine OKG. So I thought this might be better at remove ammonia then anything else. See link below:
