I'am curious to find info on these two bands. I have been told that 31 shows a long standing infection?? What about 30. I know the CDC does not count 31 since the Lyme vaccine was used from band 31 ( not sure ) ??? Thanks

Look up in the top few subjects of the medical forum. Dr C's explanation of the Western Blot by Lymetoo. That should explain the bands.

Not all labs differentiate between the molecular weights of 30,31 and 32 Kda.. most call them all all OSP A (Outer surface protein A).
Meaning if your positive for band 30- that's OSP A , and if your positive for band 31- that's OSP A also

I looked back on my IGeneX Western Blot and I had a positve IgM and IgG 19 years after getting sick. I never had the Lyme vaccine.
My IGM was
18 IND 30 + 31 ++++ 34 IND 39 IND 41 +++ 45 + 58 + 66 IND 93 IND

Right, band 31 is so indicative of Lyme they based a vaccine on it.
Did you have the vaccine? If not your test results along with your symptoms warrant Lyme treatment.
Are you currently taking any abx?

webmeg is right. Band 31 is so bb specific, that they did make the lyme vaccine out of it.
I have read that it also shows in longstanding disease and that *most* people do not test positive on band 31.
I, too, had band 31+++ along with 5 other Bb specific bands on my IgM.
only 39 was positive on my IgG and 41 IND.
At the time of testing I believe that I had been infected for at least 15-18 years...so even though my disease was old, I was actively showing new antibodies, looking like a new infection.
Sorry, but I haven't found any more technical stuff than this.

I never took the vaccine. I do live in the N East Lyme friendly area. Just wanted as much info on those bands. Perhaps some of the regulars here will direct me

feelfit........Thanks for your answer but I've heard the things you have posted ( Long term with 31 etc ) but I'm hoping I can read a paper that defines it. What would happen if your WB only had Band 31 +++. Would a LLMD say yes you have had it a long time? Can anybody ask their LLMD about 30 and 31....Thanks

Two of the major outer surface proteins are Osp A and Osp B - bands 31 Kda and 34 Kda respectively.
Bands 31 and 34 usually show up after some one has had Lyme a long time. But there are no hard and fast rules about what bands show up when in any given individual.
As far as I know the ONLY bands that don't have some controversy over whether they are cross reactive with other pathogens is Band 39 Kda (also- bands below 17 Kda are specific for the European Species are are highly specific).
There are research papers out there on Osp A. You may want to search that.
It seems other than being CDC positive, which is a very narrow criteria- the western blot data isopen to interpretation depending on who's looking at it.
But most LLMDs will agree at positive 31 or 34 band is Lyme.

Thanks Barb, I guess so but I would like some definitive answers. Can anybody ask their LLMD when they see him/her ?

I have Band 31 and the HLA DR4 genotype. My neuro LLMD (in CT) dx me with Autoimmune Chronic Lyme (worse then just Lyme)
He said "if one has Band 31 (used in the Lyme vaccine) it would trigger the HLA DR4 problem, no matter how low the Lyme levels got"
He said 30% of the population has this genotype waiting to be triggered by Lyme. The HLA DR4 test can be done through Lab corp. I suggest everyone getting it, shows you what you are up against.

Littlesprout has touched upon the controversy interpreting the western blot band data.
Some DOc aslo think that band 31 on the Igenex Blot can be cross reactive with some viruses. (That's why Igenex offers a follow on test to rule that out)
Some Docs think that if you are of certain tissue type (HLA DR4 being the major one) that certain pathogens (viral and bacterial) can tip the immune system into a chronic autoimmune situation, even after the bacteria is erradicated.
There's also controversy on whether or not (if you're symptomatic) all the Lyme bacteria is erradicated, even if there's no evidence of it's presence.

OK. What does the 31 follow up test do? Do they isolate something in your blood. Good Info keep it coming

Has anyone else on here had a positive band 30? My band 30 was positive on two Western blots -- one less than a month after my tick bite last summer, and one this past November.
I am trying to figure out if this points to an old infection (i.e. that last summer's tick bite was a reinfection). I don't really know since I've had CFIDS for fifteen years and just started looking into Lyme.
I have also read that 30 is more common in European strains and possibly in one California strain (I read this somewhere). Does anyone have more information on this? Even anecdotally?

So should everyone positive on the 31 band be tested for HLA DR4? I've never heard of this before. Is it something new?
