I always see everyone jump on someone who says 200mg/day of Doxy is too low.

Dr. C (prez ILADS) prescribed just that for my Mom's Lyme for months and months. He wouldn't prescribe a higher dose (and she's otherwise healthy, strong - no underlying conditions except Lyme).

This is an *expert* in the field, obviously.

Too strong a dose of anything (drugs, food, etc) can also cause problems...

Thoughts?

Well, I suppose if its already chronic and the goal is just to manage

symptoms, then a bacteriostatic dose, such as 200 mg, is fine.

If the infection is new, however, and you want a shot at curing it,

you need to take twice as much.

I was rx's 500 mgs of zithro, 400 mgs of doxy and 1500 of flagyl and I was a zombie and sick daily.
I cut back on everything and I've been on 200 mgs of doxy alone for over a month now and feel great.
I even went back to work this Monday after 3 1/2 months off.

The trick with lyme....NO ONE KNOWS what works or not. This is why all these rx's of abx scare the heck out of me.

I had been in remission for years.....

now after a year of symptoms....its back....

My doctor put me on doxy 200mg a day........its been about 7 weeks....

i'm trying not to panic and ask for something more......or something in addition to..

its hard i never know if i'm herxing or what...

but i do trust my doctor...she has been right about everything....espesially when others have been wrong.

i'll just stay the course for now....

Wife on Rocephin 50(!) mg daily for 11 months. Eating very little and almost to the point of early emaciation when she started. Markedly improved. Now up to 75mg... continueing to improve. She was a classic treatment failure before.

I question whether the hard herxing is helping people.. more than hurting people. If you can tolerate the higher doses fine.. I am. But for those who do not I would seriously consider going very slow and very low.

I know for me, the 200mg of doxy just made me feel so bad for the first 45 days.

A duck Rx'd it for me.

LLMD changed it to 300mg and that is when I first started to notice

That some days I felt a little better.

I weighed 128lbs then.

Maybe dosage is based on weight...

I am glad that others have good progress on 200mg a day.

I didn't.

Hugs,

Geneal

I recently visited my LLMD who is ILADS and he said 200mg does not cross the BBB, that is why 300 is better.

I wonder if it would be weight/size dependent, too?

I don't think it's enough either. Several years ago my LLMD was prescribing 200mg for newly bitten patients.

I was shocked when I found that out.
