Hi All-
Question..
has anyone had a bad reaction to Actigall?

I've been on IV Ceftriaxone for 3 months + 1 week, with no
incident until two weeks ago when I started Actigall (late in the treatment).
The next day I had a terrible reaction- felt like a heart attack.
A week after that I had another similar episode and
had to go to the emergency room. Negative for both
heart attack and blood clot in lungs.
This week I had another episode where the pain
was radiating from my chest, again, then went to the ER, again.
They found Gallstones, Biliary Colitis.
The pain was excruciating.

I checked back in my notes and found that it was only when I
started the Actigall that I got this sick. I have stopped taking it as of the last emergency room visit, yesterday, and I am feeling a whole lot better. I am also still on the IV Ceftriaxone.

Has anyone experienced something similar with Actigall?
Was this an allergic reaction?
Did it cause the gallstones? Or cause the infection?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Grace,
I started taking Actigall on the same day I began IV Rocephin.

I was on the IV for 8 months-and the actigall for 8 months along with it without any problems.

Did they have any comments about the actigall in the ER?
I always take a list of current meds and when I started them if I go to ER so the docs will know just what drugs are in my system.

Fortunately I have not visited the ER for quite some time now.

Good luck. As you know , the Actigall is to prevent problems with gallbladder while on Rocephin-perhaps it doesn't work for everyone who may have been undiagnosed prior problems.

You will definitely want this information to go to your LLMD.

It sounds like the pain you're having may be the gallstones. My pain was unbearable and it radiated through my chest to my back.

I ended up in the ER twice and finally had my gallbladder out in January after six full months on IV Rocephin.

I'm still doing Rocephin but now minus a gallbladder.

I took the Actigall from day one but couldn't avoid the gallstones.

You do know that Rocephin causes the gallstones.

Hi Grace,

My experience was the same as cobweb's--I took actigall (ursodiol) at the time I started IV Rocephen. I took both for 6 months.

Actigall helps prevent biliary sludging and gallstones. I wound up with only a small amount of gallstones that aren't causing a problem.

The following is from my pharmacy information that I got with my first prescription of actigall:

Take this medicine with food or milk.

I suggest you tell your LLMD about your concern.

Is it possible you had a bad herx?

You might try Physicians Desktop Reference:

I would blame the Rocephin also....but maybe you're sensitive to Actigall????

Why not stay off it for awhile and then see if you get another attack without it.

....Do what your doctor says to do!!! [Smile]

Thanks Everyone--

Cobby- I had a sonogram of my gallbladder two weeks before
I started the actigall and there were no problems. It was clean.
The ER wanted me to schedule an elective surgery to remove the gallstones. I declined. I really think I had an allergic reaction to the actigall. I had vomiting, sweating, chills, and pain when I
took it. I'm not ready to be sliced open just yet.. !
My LLMD's are on it.

Barb- I know the rocephin causes gallstones but it wasn't until I took the actigall that I had severe pain and other symptoms. (listed above)

Daise- I did think I was having a bad herx at first, but then the
pain became intolerable. At that point I went to the ER and they found the gallstones.

Lymetoo- I do think the actigall aggrevated the gallstones but it is so odd that they only appeared after I took the actigall. Very weird, but Lyme is weird.

I've been feeling ok without the actigall since Wednesday.
No chest pain or vomiting or other symptoms.

Thank You Everyone, I appreciate your responses and support.
