Has anyone ever been able to drink alcohol again?

I am not an alcoholic by any means but I am young and like to party with my friends.

Before I was diagnosed, after drinking I just felt like crap. Flu-like symptoms.

I guess one drink is OK every so often. It's rough, though.

For some reason it's very hard for me to deal with any alcoholic beverages. I think the same is true for many people with Lyme.

It really increases everything that makes me feel worse. Plus, I take pain killers so it's not good to mix them.

Maybe try smoking pot, instead. (Just a joke... LOL)

I do like a good frozen marguerita every so often!

I've never been a regular drinker, don't really like it.....but anyway, once in a blue moon I'd have 2 or 3 beers out at dinner. Now, I cannot touch any alcohol.....good thing I was never an alcoholic huh [Big Grin]

Why make it into a joke? I'd do it in a heartbeat. My doctors wrote "drug addict" in my records; I figure if I smoke a doobie, somehow it'll hurt less.

Problem with smoking a bone is the munchies after.

Chips soda cookies

None of this is good for us

I had 2 glass of wine a few weeks ago and woke up with a slight headache

That would have never happened before

Well, J, I am in a different demographic than you, but I DO love my wine, and was a regular, enthusiastic (NOT abusive!) wine drinker.

Since LD entered my life, my ability to tolerate alcohol is minimal. So I don't have it as often as I used to. But when I do, I keep it to one glass or 1 1/2 over the course of an evening, and I seem to do okay. Anything more, I feel terrible the next day - not worth it at all. Also, I notice I get 'tipsy' on very little these days - which can be embarrassing - my party days are long gone!

My ability to enjoy occasional glasses of wine has improved since treatment (abx over one year now.) From another angle, I don't think it's great to be drinking much at such a time anyway -our bodies are working so hard to detox the abx and the bugs that it's probably best not to tax them any further.

But part of the complete cure I aspire to is to once again regularly enjoy a beautiful glass of wine with dinner.

Best -

otm

Like Onthemend, I LOVED my wine...not to just drink, but to have a lusciously good glass of red wine. I also loved attending wine tastings.

Since Lyme, I find that I am able to tolerate a glass, but no more than that, or an ugly, ugly, hangover the next day.

I will say that wine does take me away from my symptoms for a time, but it's just not worth the repercussions the next day.

Oh how lovely it will be when I (we) am normal once again!!!!

You should be able to tolerate alcohol again with treatment. I think a big reason Lymies have difficulty with alcohol is that the stress on our system from Lyme impacts our detox system.

If you treat Lyme and get your system strong again, you should be able to tolerate alcohol.

However, I decided to stay away from alcohol until I'm done with treatment. I'm on so many medications, my liver doesn't need any more stress and I've had pancreatitis.

It definitely impacted my social life, because I had a group of friends I really only saw at bars. They are big drinkers, and I realized I was bored hanging out with them sober. But my real friends I still see, just not at bars.

While I can still tolerate alcohol and actually feel better (probably more mentally rather than physically) when drinking, the hangovers are not worth it. I'm bed-ridden and slightly delusional for a whole two days after a night of drinking.

Maybe it depends on what you like to drink.

Perhaps the Lyme or meds are making some of the wine drinkers react/allergic to the sulfites?

Occasionally, I can have 1 or 2, Gin and Tonics with lime, over the course of the evening and not have a problem. I am not on pain killers or lots of meds.

But, 1 beer { must be the hops and yeast} will leave me sick for a couple of days.

You can still go out with friends, just have a glass of seltzer or mineral water.

I know its not the same thing, but getting better is the top priority.
Please be careful.

Good point on the wine

Try making your own wine.

It's fun and easy.

Buy a kit online. Hardly any sulfates in homemade if any at all. Can't remember

later

I read that alcohol drops our CD57 level.

We need these CD57 to protect us from Bb.

Most importantly, those that are "cured".....ARE YOU ABLE TO DRINK ALCOHOL AGAIN?

We already know alcohol and Lyme don't mix.

What about after you recover from Lyme?

Do you regain your ability to drink?

By the way, I use cannabis (Mostly dried and smoked/vaporized.) and it does wonders for my nausea and appetite/wasting problems.

The small urge to eat you get from cannabis (Small if your constantly nauseous.) is NOT a deterrent for me...its a motivating factor to smoke!

It does nothing for pain, but is a very good anxiolytic, and keeps you eating.

I had a few glasses of wine during the months I was feeling all better. No problems with it.

Except!!! When on fluconazole (Diflucan.) What the heck was I thinking. I wasn't thinking.

Don't drink with azoles - Diflucan or metronidazole/ Flagyl. One drink was like five shots, and the hangover was nasty. It might as well have been antabuse.
