since my mom cannot use her arms and legs, i'm sure she is going to end up in a wheelchair. heck, she's in one now. she cannot stand or even sit up. she's like 140 pounds of jello and when someone tries to help her, she just says "i can't, i can't". it's really sad.

i know she's been hospitalized for 2 months and i know she's had pneumonia, mrsa, c. difficile, and yeast, ok, got that. i know she has not had any physical exercise for about 20 years, just toddling around the house. no matter what we did, she would NOT exercise, at all.

i know she has lyme. she's admitted to being bitten by "tons of ticks" over her lifetime.

my question is: can lyme cause severe weakness and loss of muscle tone that puts people in wheelchairs?

i would appreciate hearing from anyone who has been in a wheelchair or knows of someone who is or has been.

it could be so many things......

up until 4 years ago, i was very athletic, went on 8 mile hikes, did a lot of heavy labor, remodelling my house, did rollerblading, dancing, weight lifting. i was 18% bodyfat and about 134 pounds, so a lot of muscle. i had a bikini thong body.

anyway, now 4 years later I am almost ready for a wheel chair. i cannot hold my head up for more than an hour or so, have to lean my head against a high back chair. i work in a reclined position with my feet up most of the time. I can barely make it from the car to the house.

so yes, lyme can put you in a wheelchair and cause incredible weakness. some days just using the mouse on the computer makes my arm tired and my right leg gets tired just from using the gas pedal driving

i hope your mom gets better.

randibear, I was in a wheelchair on and off for 3 years. I was extremely weak, especially in the hips.

I still can't walk long distances - for instance, I need a wheelchair if I want to go to an amusement park with my kids.

What got me back on my feet was treatment for babesia and bartonella. These two diseases, coupled with the Lyme, made me a piece of dead weight.

The Lyme makes me weak, but the co-infections made it so much worse.

Best to your mom. - Lymelady

Hello Randibear

I personally knew three Lyme sufferers, one adult and two children, whose Lyme put them in a wheelchair. The children got much better after antibiotics but relapsed badly when taken off them. They eventually got completely better after treatment with Mebendazole (anti-helminthic).

The adult, unfortunately, has not got better. She has severe Lyme myelitis and has had long-term IV treatment with various abx. I havent been in touch with her for a while and I dont know whether she has had any anti-helminthics.

I also know of a number of people in wheelchairs who were given the diagnosis M.E. (CFS). But seeing as even our goverment here in the UK admits (very quietly) that Lyme is one cause of ME, some of these at least may well be Lymies.

Randibear, you didnt say how old your Mum was, or if she has any other concurrent conditions? Certainly the chest infection and other infections would have knocked her out, but once she had recovered from them her strength should have returned, and she should not have ended up in a wheelchair. Taking no exercise for years other than pottering about is not good, but it would not have landed her in a wheelchair either. What is the hospital's explanation for it?

Elena
