How do you know for sure its a " herx"? And NOT WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS from the radical change in diet, or meds, or quitting smoking, caffine or alcohol??? I have wondered abt this for a long time.

When people have missed doses of meds, run out of meds, or changed meds completely, or even skipped a meal.They will have reactions. So why assume its a herx?

All the symptoms are the same. Just like many of the Lyme & Co infections overlap. You can get headaches, and more by cutting back on coffee, tea or soda. Or being ill, sometimes you don't feel like eating/cooking, so you don't and have MORE symptoms...thus withdrawls and NOT herxing.Or low blood sugar.

Withdrawal Symptoms

Withdrawal symptoms are uncomfortable physical or mental changes that happen when the body is deprived of the alcohol or drugs that it is accustomed to getting. Withdrawal symptoms can last a few days to a few weeks and may include nausea or vomiting, sweating, shakiness, and anxiety. Keep in mind; withdrawal symptoms only occur if a person has regular, heavy use of a drug or alcohol.

Drug withdrawal symptoms can be extremely uncomfortable without professional help. Treatment for withdrawal from alcohol or drugs may require a medical professional to be present. { More at the link.}

Here is an article on "Sugar withdrawal"

http://www.HowToThinkThin.com Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Jonni_Good

During the first few sugar-free days you may experience headaches, fatigue, depression, drowsiness, skin eruptions, and mucus or throat discomfort.

Some of these symptoms, especially the mood swings, fatigue and drowsiness, probably occur on a daily basis when you're still eating a high-sugar diet, as the blood sugar rises and falls - but you don't usually blame it on the way you eat. When you kick the sugar habit you will be very aware that these symptoms are being caused by your recent dietary change, and you should look forward to the day when you will be completely free of them.

A caffeine withdrawal headache might be quite painful, and can last for 2 days or more,while sugar withdrawal symptoms are usually milder but may last for a week or two. Some people may experience little or no discomfort at all, and will simply receive all the benefits of a no-sugar diet almost immediately.

And the benefits are huge - better health, better moods, a feeling of increased vitality and clearer thinking." {More at the link.}

I finally decided to post this when I read, on another thread abt a possible herx from yeast. Possibly are withdrawals.

Perhaps many are suffering needlessly when making to many radical changes at one time and assuming it is an actual herx, when it may not be.

How many years of sugar and carbs did our bodies have , then to suddenly stop. We may not think we are/were addicted to sugar and NOT suspect withdrawal symptoms.

We already know our lyme infected bodies react differently, and it depends how much and what infections we do have.

Maybe keeping a daily journal would be heplful to tell the difference. Did we miss a dose of meds, or skip a meal or have an extra cup of caffine yesterday?

Perhaps this is the reason some people say herxes last weeks or months. Without realizing withdrawals are causing some of the problems.

Many of us are Not doctors, so we don't know for sure...and I'm sure many drs don't think abt withdrawals either, unless its drug addiction.

Please note: I am NOT saying true herxing dosen't exhist. I know it does.

Ive quit tobacco and sugars and percdans and none of them were even close to a herx not even a mild herx.
If you arent aching and feel like your dying its not a bad herx which after getting the first 4 months undere my belt I only herxed every 28 to 34 days.
Timing after a few months is the best indcator.

The best way to tell is to stop the meds for a day or two and see if you feel better. If it's withdrawal from something else, you won't feel better.
