I just found out through the grapevine that a mom I know who has Lyme (She believes she "had" Lyme but she's still having symptoms. She's not knowledgeable about chronic Lyme and doesn't listen to me) just got her 3 kids vaccinated against Lyme.
I didn't think there was a vaccine available right now. Also, I've read of many getting chronic Lyme from vaccines in the past. I don't get how they work anyway b/c anyone can get reinfected w/Lyme and co's at anytime. Also, I believe she was infected before having at least her youngest child. What if he's congenital AND she had him vaccinated?
When I found out about this I nearly threw up! Anyone have any info on the latest Lyme vaccines or opinions on this?

There was 10 years ago,(Lymerix) Smith Klein but they pulled it and ended up with a huge legal problems and settlements as it did more harm that good- as you noted; it gave people lyme, arthritis and or other problems. You can read more if you google Lymerix
If you were vaccinated with this you can pursue a legal settlement with a good lawyer Just look on google

PS If your friend thinks she might have had Lyme..... she should get tested and review her symptoms with a expert. If you live in MA you and your friends, kids are in a high risk area for Lyme. We know as were your neighbors in CT. Ticks do not know state boundaries, nor do they care.

At this time there is no human Lyme vaccine available to the public. Lymerix is available only to research scientists.
A Lyme vaccine is available for pet dogs & cats at your local vetenarian.
Bioveta, a Czechoslovakian company that designs and manufactures animal vaccines, has developed a next generation Lyme vaccine for humans. The Company is now looking for a partner to finance clinical trials to bringing their vaccine to market.
Baxter Vaccines Austria also has a next generation human Lyme vaccine now in development that will prevent disease from North American as well as European strains of Borrelia. They know about the potential autoimmunity issues with Lymerix, and have re-engineered the vaccine to minimize those side effects. If all goes well that vaccine will be available sometime in 2012.
The National Institute of Health in Bethesda, MD has a semisynthetic human Lyme vaccine now being tested on mice. This vaccine works on a different antigen than either the original Lymerix or the next generation Lyme vaccines now in development.
The Virginia Comonwealth University at Richmond also has a Lyme vaccine in development. The research effort is being lead by NIH funded Professor Marconi.

I had the lymerix vaccine back in 2000 or 2001 (can't remember). I was told it was 90% effective, so when I got my lyme symptoms in 2006 I never thought about lyme diseaes and of course all the doctors I saw didn't either.
I wonder every now and then if the vaccine is what actually caused lyme disease in me, but I actually don't think so because my Igenex blood test has other positive bands on it that were not associated with the vaccine. So maybe in my case it just never worked.
I have heard that most people who got lyme disease from the vaccine, got it right away and most likely lyme arthritis, which I don't have.
What do you think about this? I found out later that it was only 50% effective!

So that just confirmed what I thought when I heard about her getting her kids vaccinated. I also was under the impression that there is no vaccine available.
I have no idea then what she got her kids vaccinated with. What the other mother told me was that she paid $30 per child out of pocket. Next time I see her I will ask her.
