My doctor gave me a nerve block a couple weeks ago with lidocaine and now my pain is worse all over that area. Could he have given me steroids?? I'm very concerned.
I also have to have hernia surgery in a couple weeks. He said he would put a Barcaine drip for three days to help with pain. Does this have steroids too? Thanks, Rob

Barcaine is also known as Bupivacaine Hydrochloride. It is basically the same thing as Lidocaine the numbing medicine.
There should not be any steroids in it, but ask BEFORE you get it.
I have heard of nerve blocks that had steroids in it..I would call and ask.
I am not a doctor or nurse or anything, for the record.

Yes, they usually have steroids unless you specifically request no steroids. You must ask if you received steroids in your injection and make a point to have them record that you request no steroids in your chart and it should be on your bracelet at the hospital or day surgury where you have your procedure.
My daughter saw a pain doctor for about 2 years and we had specifically requested no steriods. Somehow she randomly got steroids mixed in with at least 3 injections that we know of now. She became very ill and we could not figure out what had happened. About 3 months after her last injection, it occured to me that she might have gotten steroids in her injections. It has been a long haul back--2 years-- and she is still not back to where she was before that mishap.
You need to tell them that you have a bad reaction to steroids. We have been chewed out for saying that she has an allergy, because you can't have an allergy to steroids-- you need them to live and your body makes them. We always put it down under allergies because that is the only area on a medical form to list that information. We now just say she isn't allergic, but has a bad reaction to them. She had to be tested to see if the steroids induced cushings which fortunately they did not,but it was still bad.
I don't mean to alarm you. You just need to be very specific with doctors about no steroids. Also, my daughter received more than one injection with steroids, over about a 9 month peroid.
Good luck and I hope you feel better.
