I've been diagnosed with a "large" hiatal hernia. The report does not state its actual size or whether it ie esophageal or para- esophageal. I'm seeing another doctor next week to start seeing what the recommendations are. I have been complaining of getting easily winded, after even mild exertion, for a couple of years and this may be part of the explanation.
Anyway, I wonder if anyone has had a repair in recent years and can tell me about it as I'm trying to get as much information and as many perspectives as possible.

I was told I have one too. My doctor said to not worry about it.

Hi David, Sorry to hear about the hernia. I've not heard of that causing shortness of breath, but I'm sure you've heard that it is seen as a symptom of Babesia. I hope you find some answers. Max has been rx'ed to go back on bicillin injections again and I was planning to email or PM you today with some questions when I saw this post. Best of luck, Nancy

Nancy,
No, I hadn't heard that a hiatal hernia could be a symptom of babs. I know that while I was searching for my diagnosis with my whole body going haywire...during that, I started having trouble with a totally different pain and the doctor said it felt like a "hiatal hernia" when he had me cough.
He basically said as Kathy said and that I should ignore it unless it got really bad. Well, years later I was diagnosed with lyme, bart and babs. Been through the babs protocols but that is why I found your comment interesting.
What aspect of babs makes this happen? I haven't really been having much trouble at all with it lately. Sometimes it would kick up LIGHTLY, but nothing even like it use to, so this is interesting.

Cathy and David, sorry for any confusion. I didn't mean to imply that hiatal hernia is a sx of Babs. It's the shortness of breath that is associated with Babs.
I found these citations re: Babesiosis and shortness of breath
This article abstract discusses the cause of shortness of breath in Babs-- non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema (NCPE) is the most frequent manifestation (which I think is fluid around the lungs, not related to heart function) http://www.springerlink.com/content/43mr046j602j1g3h/
Hope that helps.
David, I emailed you, but am not sure if you have the same address.
