Was just wondering if anyone had stopped zith due to the ear ringing and then went on biaxin with no further problems--I'd be really interested to know.

Hi Niere,
Not me personally, but the sky's the limit! Tinnitus is very tricky and individual.

Hi daise! Yes, thanks I had seen those threads. I usually try to do searches on things before I bring up new topics, but I hadn't seen anyone who had said that they had had less ear issues with biaxin than zith.
I'm just hoping someone has--zith was bad for me, hoping that biaxin will be better. I'm worried though because if I can't do zith or biaxin that will really limit my antibiotic treatment options, especially in regards to my babesia.
It's looking more and more like I'm going to have to try rife.

Here are lots of links from my research over the years. Hope you can find what you need to calm down the tinnitus.
Magnesium may be of help.
Zith has frequent reports of tinnitus. You may want to check the OTOTOXIC links at the bottom. Also check all your over-the counter stuff - even cough drops and toothpaste.
Aspartame and MSG are very excitotoxic and can trigger tinnitus, too. MSG has many names, many forms.
Heavy metals (mercury, lead, etc) also can be connnected.

VESTIBULAR LINKS
PubMed has medical abstracts from around the world.
you can search combinations such as "lyme, vestibular" or "borrelia, vestibular" or with terms such as tinnitus, hyperacusis, etc. While I'm quick on the draw regarding the danger of ototoxic meds, lyme itself can really attack the vestibular system so infections must be addressed - while keeping the ears safe.
Tinnitus is nothing to sneeze at - it can be torture and, sometimes, it does not go away if the tiny hair cells of the inner ear are destroyed.
Also know that being on abx makes a person more suseptible to hearing damage. Wearing earpugs when using the vacuum, and even the hairdryer could make or break your future . . . really.
Keeping your ipod down, using the outer headphones is better for the ears than earbuds even if low. They are just too close to the nerves.

My original page on ototoxic drugs addressed only NSAIDs, and I put it in question and answer format. Gradually I've added sections on other drugs, ...

I have had tinnitus since lyme (and babs) first reared its ugly head.
I did take zithromax for the babs for four months. I DID have the ear ringing before this, however, through 4 months of lyme antibiotics (flagyl/ketek)
After 1.5 years of lyme treatment, went off all drugs and have been off for 2 years.
My ears are still ringing off the wall. Is this a cause of the antibiotics, or do I still have babs and lyme?
It is a question we all face. I hate this illness. I do have lots of issues still, and am on permanent disability. But I just could not continue drugs any longer. Always in my mind I wonder: should I go back on?
I answered no questions. Sorry. But just to let you know, there are many long term people here who are still confused. But you do learn to live with what you still have remaining. The Question is: what is permanent, what can be helped further?

Niere - yes I had the ringing when I was on the IV zith with plaquenil. But not when IV zith alone. I was able to do lower dose of plaquenil with it wihtout the problems being so severe.
Then had it when I added mino and mepron to ORAL zith at a high dose- but not when I cut back the dose.
So, for me it was dose related as well as potentiating related. The other meds potentiated it.
I also had the hearing loss accompanying the tinnitus in the above situations, but not when I cut out the others or cut back the dosage of the zith (I was on 750 oral zith for a while after the IV because I relapsed from the reduced dosage intially)...
Never had the tinnitus with the Biaxin though - but was never on the higher dosage nor IV... I would say that it is worth a try to switch, or cut back on dosage of other meds that are accomanying it?

Island girl,
Please look at keeblers information and also follow the link on my post, which is basically the same thing, except that I added my own journey, at the bottom.
I had to actually figure out what it was about me and my particular condition from Lyme/babs/bart that caused me tinnitus. It was several things.

Me!
Zith gave me horrible ear ringing.
Biaxin does not.
Biaxin just leaves that awful taste in my mouth.

I've been sick with lyme for over 14 yrs and never had ear ringing until last April 2007. I was dx with lyme Aug 2007 and started abx in Nov 2007. The ringing never got any worse or better on the abx (zithro/doxy/flag) I'm off abx now and my ears still ring as loud.
Many knowledgable ND's believe it's caused my toxic build up, which would make total sense.

Thanks everyone! Geneal--that really gives me hope that I can do the biaxin as opposed to the zith.
I've not been long down the antibiotic path, but I have to say that all these possible permanent side effects from long term antibiotics are really fueling my investigation of alternative therapies, especially rife.
Well--we all have the treatment path that works best for us.
Wouldn't it be a kick in the behind if Pez turned out to be the lyme cure-all? I'[d take mine from a Snoopy pez. Posts: 237 | From Rhode Island | Registered: Jan 2008

I edited to add this to my above Vestibular LINKS.

Keeping your ipod down, using the outer headphones is better for the ears than earbuds even if low. They are just too close to the nerves. Avoiding headphones altogether is the best choice, although they can help block out industrial sound.
Earplugs can be worn under headphones and the music will still come through just fine due to bone conduction.

I had horrible ear ringing on Zithromax but had none of Biaxin. I think everybodys different but I think Zith causes it more.
Hope this helps, Lindsay

Lulu--you also give me hope that I can do biaxin as opposed to zith! The only thing is I don't see biaxin listed in your treatment therapy signature. Do you mind if I ask when and with what if anything you took it with?
