Been on doxy for a number of months now. I am going on vacation in a SUNNY place for a week. Is it the end of the world if I don't take it for a week? Don't doctors routinely stop patients for either testing or changes or just rest? Any thoughts? I haven't decided either way but would like some input. Either way, I'll just take it one day at a time and see if I get burned to a crisp. Plus, how long does it take after stopping to decrease the sun-sitivity?

I was on alternating minocin 400-500mg at bedtime, or 600mg doxy at bedtime for about 2 months now, and I have right hand pains and run over by truck feelin pretty bad. So I stopped for 2 days added coconut oil to diet, and woke today with LESS pain. Now there is a small risk of temp autoimmune disorder with tetra class, so perhaps that was happening to me, or just herx. But, if I just have lyme I think pulsing or switiching now to perhaps a marcolide, (rulide, zith) is what I am doing next, after a few more days off and massive probiotics AND coconut.

Are you under doctor's care? If so, did you ask him/her about going off of it?
I've been on Doxy for years (and Mino prior to that for years) for acne. I normally stop taking it while I'm at the beach in the summer, but I still react. So even if you stop, be careful. I get a horrible blister rash with any sun exposure. I get it just from the sun while I'm driving. I'm not even in the sun long enough to burn or tan.
I've learned to adapt - wear the highest SPF you can find and put it on frequently. Stay in the shade as much as possible. I stay under the umbrella while on the beach, find the shady spot if out on a boat, etc.
If anything, you'll keep your skin healthy staying out of the sun Have fun on your trip!

I looked this up already. The half life is anywhere from 12-36 hours.
That includes photosensitivity issues.
My LLMD doesn't do doxy over the summer.
I couldn't even sit outside in the shade without feeling like I was on fire.
Took one day off to get rid of that.
May want to check with LLMD and see if you can switch to a different antibiotic for summer.
Hugs,

What if I wasn't on anything for the week? And what are the ABX alternatives that don't have sun sensitivity?

How long exactly have you been sick? How long treating? Are you symptom free on Doxy? If yes, have you been for a while?
Or are you still pretty sick from Lyme?
For me, when I was on 200mg Doxy for a few months and then went off in February all my symptoms came raging back in 3-5 days.
I did 300mg Doxy for a couple months and just stopped a few days ago because I was sunburning badly (am waiting to maybe start Ceftin- doc needs to call me). This time, though, my symptoms are not raging back.
SO - what does that mean? I don't know. I seem to be at a better place than the last time so going off the doxy isn't a crisis at the moment. Maybe the same will be for you?
It might also be a good test to see where you are at? Maybe you're better?
My last Doxy was Monday morning. Today is Thursday and I was out in the sun for tennis for 1.5 hours with sunscreen of course. Did MUCH MUCH MUCH better than last week. So the sun sensitivity is improved.
My advice would be to stop the doxy 5 days or more BEFORE leaving for vacation. And don't count on being totally fine in the sun. Some people react for a long time despite the 36 hour thing.

Bit in Sep06. Strong symptoms by Mar/Apr07. Dxd in Oct07. Doxy started at Thanksgiving. Am I symptom free? I wouldn't say that I'm 100%, but have definitely been feeling better. Had planned on going til about the end of June w/ Doxy to just make sure things were in order. If I did stop for a week, my plan was to get back to it once I came back.

Is amoxicillin a good sub for doxy and what is the normal dosage? I just want to be informed on this.

Good question about stopping doxy for a week. I have the same situation. I was going to bite the bullet and stop for a week, but take either my banderol or cumanda with me for back up.
