Husband is currently taking Rifampin (150 mg/day) and Minocycline (100 mg/day).

He has been having a really tough time--probably part herx, but possibly part flare. Old symptoms are returning, but in a way that does not feel to him like a herx--rather, it feels like a recurrence.

Specifically, his skin symptoms--isolated stinging/biting bumps, subcutaneous nodules along spine, and creepy-crawlies--are returning. These have been helped in the past at different times by Rifampin, Malarone, and Bactrim (Bactrim very briefly--had to stop after a couple of weeks because of too many meds overloading his system).

I am debating between 2 courses of action:

1. Increase the Rifampin and see what happens (he is at 1/4 of the possible dose).

2. Keep current doses of Rifampin and Mino, and add Bactrim in.

I searched old posts, and saw that Rifampin has been taken with Bactrim. However, Drug Digest listed an interaction between them, stating that Rifampin decreases the effectiveness of Bactrim.

Which course of action makes more sense to you?

And/or if you have used Rifampin and Bactrim together, did you take them together, or several hours apart?

Any other ideas???

We are in limbo till appointment with new LLMD in mid-May. It's so hard to wait...

Thanks very much,
Viva

My son is beeing treated by Dr J in CT.

He was in BACTRIM with azithr and mepron , now it is switched on Azith -mepron and RIFAMPIN .

he is 70lbs and takes twice 150mg a day.

I took 300 as a starter -as I had brain sweelling and than jumped on 600 rifampin -in combo with doxy -and azthr ....but ..I tried 1200mg rifampin when my brain sweelling was gone for at least 2 weeks ..now back to 600mg..

I would go with Increase Rifampin -and take at least take cholestopure -to bind neurotoxins...

Thanks, Alv. We will certainly consider that option. We do have cholestyramine, which has been hard to schedule in to the other meds.

Up for more input!

I will soon be taking rifampin. I currently take Bactrim. I'm ramping up to a hole 800-160 pill twice a day. Currently at 3/4 twice a day. Once The herxing from a whole pill decreases I will add in rifampin.

I'm also currently taking 400mg Doxy 1x day.

This post may not help much but I will follow up as things happen.

--------------------
Current taking: Bactrim DS 3x Daily, Doxy 400mg 1x Daily, Rifampin 450mg (ramping up to 600mg) 1x Daily, Compounded Nystatin 150MU Caps 1x Daily, Plus supplements to come later.

Rifampin is primarily for Bartonella, right? And then would the Bactrim be for the lyme? Just curious.
