I'm interested in using ALA to increase Glutathione levels, as well as chelate heavy metals over the long term. In Stephen Buhner's book Healing Lyme he recommends 600mg per day, but I suspect when detoxing with Heavy Metals, that a much smaller dose would be necessary, such as 100 or 200mg a few times or more per day.
I don't know whether this information is even correct as I keep reading conflicting information, including here on the forum.
What is needed in conjunction with ALA to make it effective? Selenium? ALC? And does ALA need help removing heavy metals if it works at all in that regard? Cana few + doses do the job itself?
Any information you can provide would help.

My LLMD recommended 600 mg a day, in two doses (300 twice a day). She also recommended N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC), but I remember reading somewhere that if you're really mercury toxic, it can make you suicidal and/or psychotic.
I have definitely noticed NAC can make me irritable and a little crazy-feeling, so I know to reduce the dose when that happens.
I think it takes a while to remove any metals. You could also try EDTA suppositories for metal chelation (Medicardium).

Yeah, NAC is very useful. How large should the dose be assuming metal toxicity of a chronic nature, not acute?
Also, what does everyone else know about ALA and NAC ? Anyone have indepth information on them?

A lot of folk have found Andrew Cutler's (Phd in Biochemistry) Amalgam Illness detoxification protocol after removal of amalgams to be the safest, after trying other protocols. You can read much of it online. He warns about the use of ALA especially if you still have the amalgams in, and says it has to be used carefully.

I have no fillings, cavities etc. So does the ALA work in 200mg increments, or 100mg increments 3 times per day or 6 times per day? Should Acetyl L-Carnitine or NAC be used with ALA? Which ALA product (NAC/ALC) is the best presently?

is NAC from non-animal sources available by any company?
and ALA is vegan, right? (not sure.) is the R-lipoic acid version?
is it true that R-lipoic acid is really the only one you should take, and that it has to be sustained release because it has a very short half-life?

I have been using Thiocid by Thorne Research (alpha lipotic acid) for about six months. I've been taking 200 mg. per day. I'm wondering if anybody knows if this is the same as the antibooze drug that makes you extremely sick with the least amount of alchohol?
Thank you!

I found this discussion in a ms forum. Lipoic Acid: R vs. S forms. They also mention brand names at the end.

I'm sorry I don't have alot to offer here but I was wondering if you still have fillings.
It may not be the best idea to try to detox mercury using ALA while still having the source of the contamination - as GiGi has mentioned several times.
I have used it some but I don't take it every day. I'm waiting to get rid of the mercury fillings first... I've had to re-think alot of stuff due to still having mercury in my mouth.
My tests for mercury level are low but I suspect it may be the sub-clinical amounts that can cause damage... especially in combination with Lyme.
It also depends on your sensitivity to it.
I would just like to get rid of it & get it over with but I'm going to proceed slowly - when I have the money.
