This was one of my first symptoms, and it still happens. I believe it is due to inflammation of the vagus or other nerve that lets you speak. Sorry to be so vague! I am having a brain cramp. lol

It's definitely a symptom I struggled with off and on my whole life PRE-treatment.
You're probably herxing and then it will clear. It will not be permanent. Just another wretched obstacle to go through during this "lovely" time.

I have this. It comes and goes. If I talk any length of time on the phone I always get it.

Two other possibilities that nobody else mentioned so far come to mind....
Some drugs we take can really dry out our mucus membranes and cause this. If that is the cause, you should notice it peaking at the same time your drug dosages peak.
Lyme can supresses the thyroid. When was the last time you had a complete thyroid blood panel? Many of us need some help with natural thyroid drugs, like Armour. Hoarseness is a typical hypothyroid symptom, and if thyroid is the cause, it is usually at it's worst in the morning when you first get up.

I had hoarseness from co-infections, probably babesia.
I also get hoarseness from candida, which could be a side effect of abx. What are you doing to keep your yeast under control?

I think my hoarseness was caused by borrelia. I totally lost my voice and still do on rare occasions. It got better with borrelia antibiotics.

Hi beatlyme,
I agree with klutzo. Lyme often attacks the thyroid and one of the symptoms is hoarseness. There are many signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism.
The blood tests are simple: TSH, Free T4 and Free T3. Be sure to get a copy of the blood tests.
Then get, Living Well With Hypothyroidism, 2005 edition, by Mary J. Shomon. It may be at your library.

For over 6 months in 1997, all I could manage was a squeak or a rasp. I saw an ENT who shoved a camera up my nose and down into my voicebox. It was all NORMAL looking.
I have hypothryoidism too. TSH doesn't mean much when it comes to testing. Don't know why the endocrinologists live and die by this number.
I had high levels of Reverse T3 too. These cleared up with Compounded T3 per Dr Kent Holtorf's protocol. Eventually, some T4 was added to my meds.
Mary Shomon's books are great! She has my vote for top (maybe only?) thryoid advocate.
Sometimes, I get some gunk stuck on my vocal cords when the hoarseness happens. My LLMD thinks this is from food allergies.
I had a LEAP blood test and tested allergic or intolerant to a zillion different foods. Once I cut out these foods the hoarseness improved.
I also have candida issues which didn't clear up on 30, 60 and 90 days of Diflucan plus Nystatin. After adding heparin for hypercoagulation, I think my food allergies started to resolved. When I get done with my 9 months (or so) of heparin I'd like another IgM candida test.
I hope you find some answers. It's an annoying problem.

I could hardly speak for about 4 - 5 months at my worst - my husband probably enjoyed that!!! It was scary, I became totally uncommunicative, and the worst thing for me was being unable to read nightly to my (then) 8 year old son. And we coulddn't really converse, either. Just awful.
The hoarseness was pre-diagnosis & treatment, and was one of a triad of my very worst symptoms: difficulty swallowing, skin burning neck to toe, 24/7, and the hoarseness. I also had this little, persistent, non-productive 'cough' - but not like any typical cough you've ever had with a cold - something quite different.
After about 6 weeks' treatment with doxy (400 mgs) the hoarseness cleared up very well - along with swallowing issues - and even though many, many of my other symptoms have made occasional return appearances, this is one that's never really troubled me again (knock wood). I'm 15 months into treatment, taking mino rather than doxy/doryx for the past month.
Hopefully your hoarseness will clear up with treatment. It's all quite maddening.
Best -

Hi,
The Fall/Winter 2005 edition of the Lyme Times has a one-page article on Vagus Nerve Involvement with Lyme Disease, and hoarseness is the first bullet point they list.
I've had periods of hoarseness both pre-treatment and now continuing through five years and counting of treatment. It seems worse in the morning - lots of throat clearing when I'm talking to clients on the phone.
I, too, am hypothyroid, so it could be any of these reasons for me.
