How many of you have symptoms relating to your leg muscles (especially the hamstrings) feeling tight, painfull and often seem to be straining/pulling?
I have been suffering from this for quite a while. It seems that they also get fatigued and start twitching when over worked.
Any advice on this problem and how to treat it best would be appreciated.
My current condition is being treated by a local LLMD in NY state with oral amoxycillin 500mgx2/3times/day=3000mg/day.
Just began yesterday after 2.5 weeks of doxycycline 100mgx2/day which did nothing.
One more question, the mucle twitches are they neurological or metabolic related with magnesium and calcium? Mine come and go and are generally not constant unless I am in pain or stressed out.
Thanks again,
Dave

Hey Dave...
Welcome to LymeNet!
Can't say for sure if the muscle problem is related to either specifically... but you might want to consider the mag/cal route first? That would be easier to treat basically.
Also note.. some folks with muscle problems are coinfected with Babesiosis. Have you been checked?
While sick with Lyme, folks will not be able to handle the normal stresses of walking, bending, etc.. as they would when healthy.
You noted it happens most when you are tired or stressed... so maybe cut back on your activity level a little? NOT forever.. just till you are feeling better.
If you add some fresh lemon juice in water it helps to cut the lactic acid which can make muscles burn and sore.

Yup, I get post-exertion muscle twitches in my legs. I just deal with it. Magnesium supplements do not agree with my intestines, so I'm not sure if that would help.
I try to look on the bright side-and am glad that it is not constant.

amk...
May I suggest trying Coral Calcium? I can't do magnesium at all... makes me worse. A few of us out there like that.

If you can tolerate magnesium, you might want to see if bumping your dose would help. The US RDA of mag is 400 mg which isn't enough for some lyme patients. If you've read any of my posts about legs, I found out I was severely magnesium deficient. Magnesium Glycinate is very easy on the stomach. Don't forget, though, that you almost need to "pulse" the magnesium instead of taking a large dose at once. If you take too much at one time, the body just excretes it.
You'll probably get more effective results taking it throughout the day.
Some on this board like to take a product called Natural Calm (found at the vitaminshoppe) before bed. I take that along with Magnesium Glycinate (also found at the vitaminshoppe).
Incidentally, I've recently learned that thyorid issues can cause magnesium depletion as well as tight muscles...doesn't, however, sound like this is your problem as your tight muscles are sporadic....
Finally, if you take D-Ribose before and after exercise, it often will help with muscle soreness.
Good health to you!!!
