My sister in law was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis about 6 years ago, although she is one of the 20% who test negative for rheumatoid factor. Most references that I've found to Lyme arthritis, say that it hits the knees and other large joints primarily, with little actual joint degradation and no mention of rheumatic nodule growth. She has significant degradation, with large nodules on many bones interfering with tendon action. Because of these symptoms, she was told that Lyme was not indicated.

I was wondering 1) if any people on the list have large nodules and joint degradation with Lyme and 2) if anyone knows of any published references to joint degradation and nodule formation with Lyme.

Most likely the doctor was not that Lyme aware, certainly not an ILADS member or my sister in law would have been tested.

Look into the "Road Back Foundation" Dr. Browm treated thousands of R.A. patients with ABX for Mycoplasma infection.
The nodules went away over time as did symptoms.

I have lyme and RA. I also have Babs WA-1, Mycoplasmas, Chlamydia Pneumoniae, H Pylori.

I have been on Dr Brown's AP for 2 yrs. It alone has not been enough.

I do not have nodules (only a small percent of RA victims get the nodules and it is supposed to be an indicator of a severe form of RA) but I do have joint degradation in the wrists and ankles.

I was completely symptom free while on abx. A gene test revealed I can't detox the toxic side effects of the abx so I was pulled off all but doxy 100mg MWF. I am not doing well at the moment.

A round of 4 IVs of an herbal solution of MTE9 seems to have cleared my Babs. I have one negative test and another sample is at the lab. I sure feel like crap for someone who has cleared something. The doctor says two negative tests will confirm no Babs.

Actually, even without abx, I was doing quite well until we purchased a farm that turned out to have mold. Just as this was discovered, my mare gave birth and then rejected the foal. This was April 22. It is since then that I have gone downhill and I am certain it is the stress and added strain of mothering the orphan foal and being forced to spend hrs a day in the moldy environment. sigh.....

Infectious causes such as lyme and other stuff is certainly behind your sister-in-law's RA. RA itself is not a disease, it is just a name given to a disorder....cause unknown. Check out www.roadback.org. There she can find doctors who will treat her RA antibiotically.
