I thought I was going to DIE on Saturday when the whole extended family was at the beach.

All of a sudden, as I was walking in the water collecting shells.............my toes felt like they were on fire and being stung by a million bees at the same time!

I thought I had been attacked by an army of jellyfish or something. The second I let my feet out of the water, I ran as fast as I could (very ungracefully) through the sand and to the beach house.

I was screaming "Where's the hose????? My feet are on fire and I don't know what got me!!"

My toes weren't obviously sunburned, only a few spots were red, but the P-A-I-N was unbearable! I stood in a cold shower for relief, then got out and saw that my toes were basically a red-purple color.

I sprayed them with Solarcaine, put benadryl on them, anything I could find. It would get better, then worse, over and over. We finally left to drive home, which took waaaaaay longer than it should have. I was miserable for about a 2 1/2 hour drive home.

I found some "silver" burn cream at home that my doctor had prescribed for something a while back. That's what I've been using ever since. It seems to work the best..............all I can figure is that I actually have sunburned toes and sides of my soles, etc.

The tops of my feet are fine. It's so strange, because I wear sandals or flip-flops almost everyday. Why would I have such an extreme reaction?

I'm still doctoring my toes with that cream and haven't left the house. I took pictures of my toes to show my doctor. I just did NOT want to go in to see her and have her say "yep, you have sunburned toes!"

I think this is what happened a couple of weeks ago when I posted about the burning, stinging toes. I didn't know what it was, except maybe ants bites. But my toes ended up feeling kind of rough on the tops, like a burn.

Does the doxy REALLY do this??? If so, I've got to make a change. This won't work in Houston! I've got my 1st appt. with Dr. F. in La. next week, so maybe we'll figure something out.

Do y'all think that's what happened? It's so weird and I can't believe how painful it is! At least it wasn't this bad during the sleep study when my toes were on fire like this. I HOPE it's a sunburn and not a sign of some kind of co-infection........

Yes, doxy really does do that. I know some docs (even non-LLMD's) do NOT prescribe doxy during the summer months. My son's derm doc prescribed minocycline for him (for his "acne") during the summer months. . .

Both my son and I have reacted in very much the same manner as you described here. My hands (the tops only) reacted that way while I was on doxy during the spring months, when I was on it years ago. I would only take doxy for a 3 months period of time, then my llmd switched me to another combo . . . and I noticed that after that first 3 month round, during the next 2 subsequent rounds, my body reacted worse and worse to the doxy.

I felt that I was becoming "allergic" to it, and my llmd concurred with that. I finally developed sun poisoning (little red dots, very VERY PAINFUL) on the tops of my hands during the last 3 month round of taking it. Enough to tell me that I would no longer give doxy a try.

My son who also was put on doxy for 3 months periods of time also developed "allergic" reactions to doxy. His face began to break out in acne type blisters all over his body during his last doxy round, and he also was told to never take it again.

I think the body just reacts harshly to it as we keep taking it. It's very painful, I know EXACTLY how your toes feel! I'd get off of it and not take it again, if I were you.
Nothing helps the pain, sorry to say . . .

Thanks for your advice! I DO think it's time for a change. I've been on the doxy since last August. Guess I've been sort of lucky, or I haven't noticed such a major reaction like this.

There's no way I can do this! I do have some tiny red dots on my toes...........not a good sign, huh?

I appreciate your input.

Take care,
terri3boys [Eek!]

My LLMD does not do doxy over the summer.

Thank goodness.

I do alright in the late fall and (when we have one) winter.

I drove once to Texas during the fall (don't know how I made this trip [shake] ).

By the time I had gotten there, my left hand was burning and tingling.

Extrememly painful.

It didn't show for about 3 days, but my left hand was fried.

I learned to do the Michael Jackson thing with the one glove real fast. [Smile]

Yes, people stared, but then.....I guess I would have too.

Hugs,

Geneal

Terri, if your toes didn't burn on top it could be peripheral neuropathy not sunburn.

I'm in the Houston area too (Ft Bend county). I know what you mean by flip flops all year...we have sun aplenty except in Dec-Feb.

Doxy doesn't make me burn but I used to get terrible burning feet from the nerve damage. Neurontin and/or ultram seemed to be the only thing that helped it...and time.

Well, I've been on the doxy since last August, and I haven't had anything like this happen. Maybe it's time for a change.

I hesitate to call my doctor here, since I'm going to my 1st LLMD appt. in La. next week. He may want to change me to something totally different.

Can I last a week, though? LOL! I've been on neurontin for at least 10 years, so I know it does help with the neuropathy. A lot of different kinds of neuropathies.

Problem is that I DO need a refill on my doxy. Maybe I should call my doctor here and tell them what's happened. Then they're going to make me come in, which is pointless. They just need to maybe change the abx to minocycline or something.

I don't know. Thanks for your replies. I've got to work up some "happy thoughts" right now. Today is our 14th wedding anniversary, and I haven't done as much as get a CARD yet! That's not very sweet and loving, is it?

There's just too much going on. I need to simplify..............anyone know a simple way to do that??????

Take care of your toes,
terri3boys

On doxy you must avoid sun completely. If you must go out in strong sun you need a sun-hat and super-sunscreen with titanium dioxide on anything exposed, as well as good sunglasses.
I hope your feet don't get too bad. When I was on high doses of doxy I got sunburnt very easily, too. But with the 3 protective factors I mention above, I was still able to go out sometimes.

I am on doxy and scared to death to go outside. I don't know what else to take though for chronic lyme/erlichiosis. I only have one more day on doxy...how long after the last dose until you can go out in the sun again without frying? I have kids man, and it is summer! this stinks!
