is anyone taking vancomycin and covered by medicare? i went to the drug store today to pick up my mother's prescription and they almost had to revive me after i was told what the co-pay would be.
had to leave the vanco at the drug store til the medicare customer service phone lines open tomorrow.
i'm hoping it's a mistake... a really, really BIG mistake.

Just so you know medicare part d (the prescription portion of medicare) has alot of different plans...
So ten people could have different copays because they all have different medicare part d plans.

Does your Mom have Part D Drug coverage now?
If your Mom is eligible for what Medicare calls "extra help" and she's gone through that process, then on Monday she can probably switch over to another Part D drug plan, effective Tuesday!
But only if she is now eligible for "extra help."
She can check the back of her Medicare & You book for her state, to see what plans there are.
If she is poor and qualifies for "extra help" then it may be that in her state her Part D drug plan monthly premium may be free or a small amount. It's the same when she switches over.
Check the back of that book, where the Part D drug plans are. AFTER SHE SIGNS UP for the new insurance company plan (and if she qualifies for Medicare's "extra help,) the company can then tell her what her REDUCED monthly premium and copays will be.
If she is poor, has she even signed up for "extra help?" It's well worth it!
If she has more than straight Medicare and more than a drug plan right now (if Part A & B are covered plus drugs,) then look for that type of plan to switch to right away. These companies' plans are in the back of your booklet, too.
The back of the booklet, where the various companies are listed, may give written hints about plans.

PS If she needs to, there is nothing wrong with asking 2 or 3 insurance companies to send a rep out to explain their plan. However, she has a pressing need for medication.
Ask the rep to bring a formulary book and look up vancomycin. With "extra help" what will the lower copay be, once she signs-on? The rep can't say for sure, but you can try to figure it.
