I have a general question....My tests came back from Fry Lab, with all negative results, yet the smears showed "suggestive of hemobartonella or mycoplasma". For that reason, I've now changed up abx, to take Rifampin with Doxy. I've seen threads where many have been prescribed that same combo.

Last night after filling my first prescription, my pharmacist phoned me at home, and asked if I was aware that Rifampin taken with Doxy, weakens the effects of the Doxy. If that's the case, why are so many LLMDs prescribing this very combo? Do they not know that these two drugs have negative interaction connotations?

Yes they know so usually the doc will increase the normal dosage of Doxy given to counter act that effect. In my case I took 400 mg of Doxy a day versus the more standard 200mg.

Patrick, I've read where many people were only taking 200 mg of Doxy, along with 600 mg. of Rifampin. Your case makes sense.

My LLMD was aware of it. He prescribed 400 mg doxy + 100 mino with my Rifampin!

Craig,

Although I haven't been on that combo, I do know that I too have been on combo's of meds through my LLMD that the pharmacist will say shouldn't always be taken together, but basically, most of the LLMD's already know this and make allowances for it.

Since so many of the meds we take, do better while taking another one with it, there really is some rhyme or reason to this, but it sure can get confusing.

Good luck in your treatment.

Cathy

Thanks everyone. I just had not seen in any of the prior threads, where it was mentioned about the interaction. The only posts I saw dealing with the combination, had most people being prescribed only 200 mg. of Doryx. Making considerations for the interaction, by upping the dosage, makes total sense.
