My 2 year old is taking liquid ceftin and nystatin. Both are so gross. I tasted them and YUCK!
I had the Ceftin flavored but it is still really bad. Also, I mixed the 1/8 dosage of nystatin poweder with koolaid and you can still taste it.
Any ideas? I am tempted to mix it with chocolate syrup to get it down. I am really in need of some tricks to the trade. Posts: 183 | From Texas | Registered: Nov 2007

Can you do the old "squirt it in the back of the throat so they have to swallow it" trick?
Then follow it up with a chaser?
Two is probably too young for bribery .....

I did the squirt it in the back of the mouth trick for the ceftin and followed it up with grapes. That worked for me.
However, the nystatin is different.
With every swig of the nystatin/koolaid combo I would give her an M&M. After a few tries she decided M&M's are good...but not worth it.
I wonder if something with carbonation like very cold sprite might hide the taste of the nystatin powder.
The ceftin is a one/two shot swallow but the nystatin has to be in 4-6oz of liquid.
Any other thoughts?
Dr. C told us to avoid sugar but if needed we could use it to get the medicine down. (A spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down)

I hear ya about the Nystatin....It's gross. I couldn't get my daughter to take it either (and she is old enough to bribe with clothes, toys and such)...lol.
The powder is gross.
However, the pre-mixed pharmacy (sugar added) version tastes great! I tried it myself---tastes like a melted orange popsicle. We ended up giving it to my daughter in this form instead. Avoid sugar in other areas, like candy, cookies, etc....But, for a medicine---This was totally sugar worthy!

I wish I knew there was another option. We purchased the medicine at $75.00 so we are stuck with it for the long haul.
Wouldn't you think that if I mixed it with macaroni and cheese, yogurt, or another food then had her drink water that it would all even out in her stomach.
I hate to assume but isn't it all going to the same place and if done at the same time we might still get the benefits.
Still brainstorming.

We've doctored up meds for kids in chocolate milk. We make our own with Hershey's chocolate powder and agave or stevia depending on the sugar tolerance situation.
I found my 3 year old had no idea that it was in there. Older kids do, but they're willing too.

Try mixing the powder with only a spoonful or two of something really like:
Sugar free chocolate pudding, ice cream, sherbet, or Yogurt would work well. Sugar free/low sugar toppings/syrups for ice cream (strawberry, caramel, butterscotch, etc) might be good to try too. Some kids even like a bite of regular grape jelly.
This is what they do for kids and the elderly in the hospital.
After they finish the medicine bite give them some of the good stuff to follow.
It is extremely hard to mask the flavor of medicine mixed in any liquid.
Good luck!

I have tried chocolate milk, grape juice, and applesauce with a giant teaspoon of powdered sugar on top. I still need to try nutella.
She now doesn't trust me on her food. She asked why her food keeps tasting yucky.
So what am I to do. It has to be mixed with 4-6 oz of water or at best with food.
My next try will be a spoonfull of jelly and nystatin powder with a follow up treat. I will just be honest with her and tell her it is going to taste yucky at first.
Any other ideas. I know this doesn't seem like an emergency. But this child has to take her medicine.
I am still able to pour the ceftin teaspoon down the back of her throat.
Thanks again for the help.

Tell her what a big girl she is for understanding that she has to take this yucky medicine to feel better. It sounds like hiding it will be impossible ... you'll have to be upfront with her.
Explain it to her like she's older than she is. She will appreciate being treated like she's bigger than she is. She probably understands more than you think she does .... it's easier to understand than to speak.
Then ask her which food she thought was the least bad. Let her decide which way to take it .... then follow it up with the water it's supposed to be mixed with.

Thanks. You are right about letting her be involved. Maybe like a taste test. The jelly worked better then I expected. Thanks again.

Jelly sounds so nasty! Yuck! I think I'd rather have dry nystatin powder than having it mixed with jelly! Maybe they should make peanut butter and nystatin jelly sandwiches for little ones.

Have you tried mixing it with jello? Rather than mixing it per directions, try mixing one or two tablespoons of jello with just a little bit of water and the medicine and spoon it right into her mouth.
Jello has a lot more sweetness than what koolaid would.
I realize that kids that young are hard to bribe. You could try "special things" such as finger painting, play-do, blowing bubbles, sidewalk chalk, or bath paints. Don't use these "special things" any other time. It can only be used if the medicine is taken.
I realize some of these things are messy, but if it works to get the medicine down, it's probably worth it. Just a thought.
