My coated tongue has small white bumps along one side and under the front. I can hardly eat due to the pain. I plan to 'swish and swallow' Nystatin once I get it. Tramadol is prescribed for the pain (I hope it doesn't react with paxil CR and Klonapin, the spec sheet says it will...). I'm in a relapse and can't take more setbacks (so fatigued)!!!
Any advise on what works, etc.? [confused]

My ND gave me a tincture "throat tea" it has the kind of tea tree oil in it that can be ingested. Some are for topical use only.

It seems to help.

Having been there.... and I know it is NOT fun...

May I suggest?

Put about a teaspoon to a tablespoon of white vinegar in a pint of room temperature water and stir it up.

SLOWLY take a little sip making sure it doesn't "shock you" with the vinegar odor....

If ok... then slowly and gently swish this in your mouth... then spit.

The yeast doesn't like the acid environment. After a couple days of doing this every couple of hours or so... you should feel better.

Don't do it for more than 2-3 days though... as vinegar.. they say (?) can have yeast. I don't know about that.. but that is what I've heard.

BUT.. doing this can help knock it down faster than waiting a week or more for the Nystatin to work.

Females should also address vaginal yeast.... even if they don't notice the "classic" signs.

Hope you feel better soon.

I have a couple pieces of advice. I doubt they will eradicate the yeast, but they may help.

I hope you are taking plenty of probiotics (ex--acidophilus). Take a LOT of a high quality one. I take 8 per day. Take them 3 hours after your antibiotics, if you are on them.

One thing you can try---open up one of the probiotic capsules (or get chewables), and spread it like a paste in your mouth, and let it sit there as long as you can, then swallow.

Hopefully those "good bacteria" will go to work on the yeast.

Another important thing if you have thrush: make sure your toothpaste isn't "Whitening." Look at the tube, and if it says "whiten" anywhere, don't use it, at least right now.

This is just my hypothesis, since I got thrush once from using Crest Whitestrips. I think the whitening agent kills the good bacteria in your mouth, disrupting the balance, and enabling yeast to take over.

Just understand it's always a balancing act between good bacteria and yeast. While you want yeast to go down, it will only stay down if you have good bacteria there!

I read something about tea tree oil....just be careful and don't make your own tea, because I have heard it can be toxic if you don't use it right.

If you can get any Diflucan, that is honestly your best bet. That should wipe it out. But in the mean time, try all these other things.

PS--I'm sure if you have a tongue coating you have yeast.....but are you sure it's thrush? Because when I get thrush, my teeth and gums hurt really bad.

Liquid oral Nystatin would be the most agressive and efficient way to kill it. Swish in your mouth a couple times a day.

You'll need an RX from LLMD but it's good to have around the house because you'll probably get at least one more during your treatment.

I'v had 3-4 cases of thrush.

Best,

C said"...Swish in your mouth a couple times a day."

After reading that my guess is not all directions are the same on all Nystatin prescriptions? I've not heard the doses mentioned above, which is why I am mentioning this now.

Be sure to follow the directions YOU were given carefully. Try not to miss a dose.

Example- Some are told to use it 4 times a day... and some say to swallow after swishing.

Prescription Nystatin can be compounded to have no sugar by compounding pharmacies, however, it is much more expensive, usually not covered by insurance and it tastes AWFUL. So bad you might not use it.

This tastes wretched awful, but I take a few drops of oregano oil, mix it with a small amount of water, and swish it around in my mouth.

That and taking garlic capsules, along with Nystatin tablets and probiotics, seems to keep yeast at bay.

Liquid oral Nystatin when compounded is NASTY tasting. I take it 3x/day as a precaution, but most days I only take it 1x/day because it's so nasty.

It does work though. I had the beginnings of thrush, and I upped my dose, and it did help get rid of it.

Also, once you use the nystatin/yeast killing herb, make sure you open up a probiotic capsule and put it in a little water (about 1 oz). Mix it up and then swish it in your mouth...it helps get good bacteria back in your mouth.

Thanks, everyone!
I'm starting to feel better with the Nystatin and I think insurance helped pay for it. I'm on 1/4 t. 4x/day and can go to 1/2 t. next week--it should clear up in 3 weeks... Tastes bad but nothing like grapefruit seed extract or plain cod liver oil.
If the tongue coating isn't yeast, I don't know what it is. It seems my tongue has been coated since lyme began and it can get a lot worse when I'm weaker (had to use Nystatin twice before) but this time there's painful little sore spots on my tongue (plus the coating is thicker).
I tried diflucan within the past year and got worse palpitations, weakness, etc. after 2 pills (had to stop).
Thanks again,
Mel
