Well, the possible side effects listed are enough to make me not want to start taking this.

Headaches, dizziness (already have those) why would I want more?

Call my doctor if I experience hair loss? Has this happened to anyone?

I hate starting a new med just before the weekend when I won't be able to reach anyone.

If you have had a positive/negative experience, please share.

I coudn't pick up my bicillin - insurance won't pay for it. Oh well.

I have been on plaquenil on a number of occasions and haven't had any horrible side effects. I did get a big boost in herx, which caused me to have to stop taking it or cut back the dosage after a few months at a time. The last time I was on it most recently I didn't have any side effects at all.

Good luck!

I've been on plaquenil for about two years and haven't noticed any negative side effects from it.

I have had no side effects and been on it for 16 months. I think it's a great drug.

My hair has thickened back up during treatment (I had lost a lot pre-treatment), so I know it didn't cause hair loss.

I took plaquenil for about nine months along with biaxin and ceftin and didn't notice any side effects.

If you are nervous about taking it, maybe wait til Monday to start. I am not a doctor...

Oh my gosh - I just remembered that my first LLMD had talked about putting me on plaquenil.

Shortly after that I saw a retina specialist and he said since I didn't weigh 130 I couldn't be on a full dose.

I totally forgot to tell my new doc about that.

I think I will certainly wait until Monday now.

I would love to have thick hair 6goofy - it's always been baby fine.

Thanks

I did NOT weigh 130 when I started and barely weigh that now. I take the full dose.

I like my hair now that it's thickened back up, too. [Smile]

Oh - alrighty then, maybe I'll go ahead.

I don't know why I'm so nervous about this one.

Thanks 6goofy - by full dose do you mean 200 mg twice a day?

Plaq is one of my favorite meds. It has very few side effects.

My hair has always been super thick. Pony tail the size of a tree trunk kind of thick. When I started DHEA, it caused my hair to thin. For the first time in my life, my hair laid down flat and was easy to work with.

Dr stopped the DHEA last Dec and now my hair has all grown back....darn it.

Isn't funny how we always want what we don't have?

A few months ago i was in your position. I stalled for many weeks, because I was afraid of this drug.

I think what set me off was reading other people's bad experiences and someone's reference to "explosive flatulence." eek!

Anyhow, I've only been on it for a few months, but so far I'm fine.

I weigh a little under the 130... Maybe 115 - 120, and I used a website to calculate a safe dose. I take a little less than my prescribed 400 mg/day. My lyme doc didn't think that was necessary, but I just wanted to be on the safe side.

good luck.

What led me to ask the retina specialist about plaquenil was becasue of all the things I read about it causing eye problems.

That's when he said I shouldn't take a full dose and that he would send a letter to my doc.

Well, that LLMD closed his practice and I don't know what happened to the letter.

My guess is that the LLMDs would be aware if someone it too tiny to be taking a full dose so I guess I'm not going to worry about it.

Maureen2174 - sounds like there's plenty of people under 130 pounds doing okay on it. I just always hate starting a new med.

Ain't we got fun?

Unfortunately I am one of the few people who could not tolerate Plaq!!.....

Have tried it several times (really wanted to be able to take it for possible pain-relief reasons also!!!). But each time I try it, within 36 hours - even at half dose - my eyes go totally crazy - really painful, sore, red, blurry vision and monster headaches......Been checked several times by Eye doc and all looks fine at the back of eye...but both he and my LLMD just think that Plaq must be totally toxic for my eyes....and my LLMD is scared of me trying it again.
