I'm starting rocephin 2 gm daily. I'm getting a PICC line. I've got the powder in the bottle and need to reconstitute it. Anyone know of a good, reasonable supplier for tubing, 50 or 100ml bags, needles, dressing? I did a search and camu up with nothing. Are they using heparin to flush the line now or saline? Thanks, Liz

I use Fountain Valley Pharmacy. Ask for Marc 714-979-9600 and see if he can work with you and your budget!

Hi Zil!
Yes, I did heparin and saline syringes with a PICC line for Rocephen. My prescription was for 4 days on and 3 days off every week, called pulsing.
I herxed every 28 days, It lasted for weeks and overlapped with the next herx. Yet some herx differently.
Be sure you know the correct order of syringes to use, for your prescription! Make sure!
To make it easy, here is the link to what BettyG told you about. There are atleast 2 pages of this link:
There is also a lot of information about the taking of Rocephen on this website. Go to near the top this page and click "search" and enter Rocephen, and indicate Medical--any date.
Use lots of alcohol wipes--they're very cheap at Walmart and come in a box, near the diabetes section. Clean the opening-area with these, and don't spare them.
Be fastidiously clean about your procedure!
Determine, by searching this site, how you will cover the PICC line for taking a shower. Moisture is what can cause problems, as it may reach under the dressing.
If the dressing area gets moisture and doesn't dry out right away, that's a problem. You have to be aware of that, because germs grow in moisture.
Many are allergic to latex used in dressings (bandages, tapes and so forth.) It may help to inquire ahead of time.
Septic shock may happen with PICC lines. Be very careful, as this is AN EMERGENCY--GO TO THE ER NOW. There is information on this site and also in this months Public Health Alert:
Make a sleeve to envelope the PICC for practical living when you aren't using it: cut off all of the thick ribbing of a cotton sock!
I didn't use the powder--mine came ready to go in syringes which had to be kept REFRIGERATED (even in transport from the home health care pharmacy, with two ice packs.)
Does the powder that you're using need to be kept refrigerated?
Before I could use them, they had to sit out on my tray for--was it 10 or 15 minutes to get to room temperature????????
I used a plastic tray--so did my home health care nurse. I cleaned it with alcohol wipes!
You can buy antibacterial soap, Walgreen's brand, for cheap. It comes in a plastic bottle with a pump.
I kept paper towels to dry hands after washing, for me and my nurse, in a plastic sleeve that I devised, trying to keep them clean.
If there is EVER redness starting near the insertion of the PICC or swelling--or oozing: GET TO AN ER NOW. OK? Just DO IT. The line may very well need to be pulled.
Once the PICC line is inserted, it should never hurt--if it does, it was probably not inserted correctly.
You can't lift more than 5 pounds or one gallon with a PICC if it's in your arm--if it's elsewhere, I don't know what the recommendations are.
I had the PICC in the lower part of my upper left arm. The patient decides what arm!
I had the PICC for 6 months and all went very well. I considered it my part-time job to care for the PICC correctly!

Thanks for all the responses and advice. I hope the rocephin does it for me.

Howdy Zil,
IV Rocephen is very good for neuro/cognitive. Just hang in there! With Rocephen you need to take ursodial (Actigal) to help prevent gallstones. That's important.
Immediately following that I did ten months of LA Bicillin intramuscular shots in the 'ol rear, 3 times a week. That is also very good for neuro/cognitive.
Neither of these is processed in the GI tract.
But treatment takes time--it just does. Gotta hang in there with the herxes.
