has anyone mixed their own rocephin powder and appropriate diluant? if so, how did you ensure sterility? or am i better off having a compounding pharmacy do it? i can get a good price on the 2 gram vials but am having trouble finding a pharmacist that will mix it for me after i purchase myself. i am located in oakland, california.
thanks

I mixed my own. The pharmacy sends all the the things you would need. I usually wipe the tops of the bottles with alcohol wipes. Other than that, I have not had any problems. The bottles have seals that you break off before you can even insert the syringe into them. I actually prefer this to keeping mixed Rocephin in the fridge. Much easier for travel as well.

It's a known fact that having a pharmacy mix it and send it to you is less risk all around, because if something happens you can go back to them.

Unforchunetly most insurances don't over IV Rocephin. I luckily got mine to cover 3 months of home health care and IV rocephin. I knew my insurance would cut me off so I and my nurse teach me everything I would need to know.

I also knew that supplies were going to be the most expensive part of the treatment so I kinda lied to my home health company and told them I needed double or triple the supplies I actually needed. For example saline and heperin flushes. Sound like a simple thing but it was one less thing I ended up having to pay for (at least for a few months).

My insurance did cut me off and I found a pharmacy in LA Fountain Valley Pharmacy (ask for Marc) who sells Rocephin in two gram vials. You can buy 30 vials for $350. That is the cheapest I have found. Then you can buy your supplies from them too. I'm not sure how competitive their supplies are, but I spent about $500 for everything I needed.

There's also another pharmacy in LA that I know people go to and they mix the Rocephin for you and send it out just like a home health agency with all supplies included. They charge around $1000 a month for everything (I think, but prices can vary based on treatment plan).

I don't have their info but I can get it if you want to go that route.

Send me an e-mail at [email protected].

Best,
Lindsay
