I just saw a llmd yesterday. I was bitten 3 1/2 weeks ago and have been on 500 mg amoxicillin 3x/day for the past week, given to me by gynecologist. llmd prescribed 1500 mg 2x/day and zithromax 500 mg 1x/day for 5 days on then 2 days off. Then repeat every week for 6-8 weeks. Is this appropriate treatment for initial infection? llmd said spirochete has disseminated through blood stream and this is what is causing joint pain. I had only heard of continuous antibiotics before. Also, I am about 7 1/2 weeks pregnant.

I take my ABX 5 days a week, take the weekend off, and sometimes take Friday night off as well - I feel much better on this protocol.
The spirochetes take a long time to replicate - this is not at all the same as treating strep throat, for instance. Taking a few days off is okay ... some people take a full week off.
Also, since the spirochetes can protect themselves & go into hiding when under attack, taking the 2 days off may trick them into re-emerging, ready to be attacked at the next onslaught of ABX. I believe it works for me.

Is this appropriate treatment for a new infection though. I just don't want to lower my chances of heading this off before it becomes a chronic problem. Or is the doctor basically saying it's too late for that since the spirochete has already disseminated?

Debbie, I am sure that you have heard this from your doctor, but be certain to take lots of probiotics with these abx, in between taking the antibiotics.
Personally, I take abx every day, but my situation is quite different that yours in that I had untreated lyme for many years before starting tx.
It's good to ask questions about treatments. But if you trust your doctor and feel confident in their clinical experience and capabilities (and it usually comes down to that confidence in your doctor), then it is probably best to follow their instructions.

I am just so upset and scared right now. I know several people who have highly recommended this doctor. But I think they all saw him long after the initial onset. I have met with him 1 time and am putting my future in his hands, I feel. I would just like some validation that what he is directing me to do may work.
