Hi, everybody.
Can the flagyl experts give me some input here? I know you can't drink any alcohol when you take it, but I really know nothing else.
Do I need to avoid anything else when taking it?
Any warning signs to watch out for?

It could possibly 'stir things up' in your gi tract at first, especially if you have a yeast issue. But it does pass after a few days (5ish I think). Also gets into your head pretty well - crosses BBB. I recall dreaming for the 1st time in years - really vivid dreams.
The one thing to watch out for is nerve pain (neuropathy?) - particularly in the legs/feet. I never had it but know others who have.
Although you may hear lots of Flagyl bashing, I have ALWAYS said that I felt better for being on Flagyl.

I started out on Flagyl and Zith. Caused upset stomach especially after a week or two. Also herxed a great deal. Do not even use mouthwash with alcohol in it. It will make you very sick.

I just started Flagyl. Started out 1/8 pill for two days, today I took 1/4 pill. Very tired.
Is it worth it?
Would welcome more experiences.

Flagyl can easily cause a yeast overgrowth.
Also remember the "headache from heck" feeling with someone stabbing me from inside my head.
Start slow. Ramp up slowly.

How you react to Flagyl can be very different from what others experience.
I was on Flagyl for maybe 6-8 weeks. During that time, I developed a problem with my hands, dropping things, buzzing, and finger pains.
I don't know if it was the Flagyl, but it is suspicious. I discontinued the medication, and now (4 months later), I continue to have problems with my hands.
I continue to drop things, have trouble with fine manipulation, and get burning/buzzing painds in my hand and trembling after using them for a few minutes (like loading the dishwasher).
My advice to you is to monitor any new symptoms, because there is a very real (though definitely uncommon) risk of permanent neuropathy.
Don't mean to scare you. Just wanted to share my experience.

Flagyl was the most effective, but also the most difficult abx I was on. Stayed with it (and zithromax I think) for almost one year, but by the time I got off, although most of the lyme symptoms were gone, I had yeast problems, black tongue, depession and total loss of appetite due to the yucky feeling.
So I would definitely take a really strong acidophilus, lots of it, while on Flagyl. I did not know about Theralac back then, and think it would have made a big difference.
Good luck. It really worked wonders...but was a real bother to live with. I was too I am sure, when I was on it!

InADaze: I would say that is the neuropathy discussed above. Yes, it can cause permanent damage... so do pay attention to anything new with any new drug.
I hope you DO recover from the symptoms. It may just take some time.

I have been suffering from peripheral neuropathy (sensation of needles on fire being stabbed into hands and feet) for months since stopping Flagyl, and I was only on it for two weeks, tops, that time around (took it another time without incident). Be really careful about this!!!
At the first sign of tingling/pins and needles pain/sensation of fire being poured on your hands or feet, stop immediately and call your doctor.
