Well I just got off the phone with my mother who is pretty knowlegable about herbs and stuff. Guess what? she has forgotton most of it.

My grandmother who was 'very' swedish used alot of different remedies for different stuff. Her most favorite was drinking a glass of vinegar with honey in it. It wasn't a full glass and I have no idea how much of what she used.

I was subjected to her 'cures' when I was little but I only remember having to swallow down a huge spoonful of dark molassass(sp).

She used a potato skin to cure my first wart and gave me cabbage to eat for bm issues.

Does anyone here have similar stories and can you remember how much of what to use.

I thought you would like this website about apple cider vinegar. http://www.bragg.com/FAQ/faq_applecider.html

One to two tsp. vinegar (organic, raw) and one to two tsp. honey in a glass of water three times per day.

Awesome!!! Thanks sixgoofykids that is a great start for my search. Now I see why she was drinking that.

That is totally what I'm looking for.

I'm not looking for gimicky remedies or exotic stuff. I really would like to know how to use the items my grandmother used such as molasses, garlic etc.

I've surfed the net quite a bit and all I seem to be able to find is all the pills and combinations of exotic herbs. [dizzy] I need to keep it cheap and simple. Any Ideas? [confused]

If you are going to use real garlic and not pills, I have heard it works better if you do it after a meal. Otherwise, they say it doesn't have much effect, but who knows. I would assume there is a small effect against pathogens like spirochetes.

I know in Norway (so maybe Sweden too?) they take Cod Liver Oil a lot, even before it really "caught on" as a health food craze here in the States. I believe in Norweigen it is called "tran." My husband is learning to speak Norweigen and it was one of his vocabulary words, if that gives you any idea how much a part of their culture it is!

It helps with a lot of things, like regularity, immunity, cognition, has all the Omega-3's, etc.

I believe salt has healing qualities, though many on this website will caution against over-using it. I take salt pills sometimes for energy. I make them myself with empty capsules out of sea salt (not that table salt stuff!!!) I also believe they have an action against infections.

Soaking in Epsom Salt in the tub. Also, sometimes some will add two bottles of hydrogen peroxide (don't get it in your eyes!). I believe this is for detox but the epsom salt will soothe sore muscles.

You can also make your own toothpaste out of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.

I will probably think of more later......good luck

As every kind of toothpaste burns my mouth, I have taken to my grandmother's formula of salt or baking soda. But, my dentist tells me that the baking soda should be dissolved and a soft brush should be used so as not to scratch the tooth enamel.

Same with salt, let it dissolve before brushing.

-

If you are going to use raw garlic, while it is a wonderful thing, I'd read up extensively on it.

It can burn, and more than 2 cloves a day can cause anemia.
(As per Beranrd Jenson, Ph.D in "Garlic Healing Powers" IBSN 0-932615-26-0 - the author was born in 1908 and lived until 2001. He loved garlic.

-

I am concerned that some such home remedies, while safe in my Grandma's hands, lost much in the translation as the years and memories have faded.

Also, my grandmother put butter on kitchen burns. That was the worst thing to do and caused more pain but she insisted until reading about how cold water is better.

I do think my grandmother knew most about castor oil, though.

It would be fun to find a book that has sifted through our elders' advice and sorted out the good from the not so good.

There are a million good books on herbal medicine and many bad books on it.

One that you might enjoy is:

THE ONE EARTH HERBAL SOURCEBOOK (Tittotson)

http://oneearthherbs.squarespace.com

Much of it is on the web or you can get it from the author or at Amazon.

There are many, many more. If you want names, I'll sent you 6-8 more.

You might also get the Buhner book "Healing Lyme" You can read more about it at Amazon or his web site:

www.gaianstudies.org/lyme-updates.htm

--

Two books at Amazon:

A SPOONFUL OF GINGER

THE CURE IS IN THE KITCHEN

This is just a beginning.

There was a wonderful little novel I read about 1995 about a grandmother midwife/doctor teaching her grand-daughter all these sorts of things. The grand-daughter's character went on to medical school. The author's name many have been Sue --

Edgar Cayce has alot of these "old timey" type of remedies. You may want to check here:

http://www.edgarcayceproducts.com/products.html

I really like the Egyptian Oil.

This website also has some interesting stuff:

http://www.jcrowsmarketplace.com/

I like the idea of simple remedies, too.

Yep hoosier, they must use cod liver oil in sweden. When I was little my mom would have us meet her at the refrigerator. She'd be holding a big spoon in one hand and a brown bottle in the other.

To this day I can remember the taste [Frown] I might be able to take it in pill form. Good idea.

keebler and sparkle thank you for the sites to visit. Haven't yet but I will in a little bit.

Thank you, proudmom [hi]

It must have come a long way since then, because I take it in the bottle form right now, and you can buy it with lemon flavor and it is actually not that bad. I still plug my nose though. But you have to take a lot of pills to equal the same as what you get in a spoonful!

Just a word of advice: be sure to buy a high quality brand, because since it is from fish, it can contain "heavy metals" nowadays. Read on the bottle, and hopefully it will say "free from metals"...or however they word it.

Everyone in my family takes it for some reason or another! Except my hubby....can't get him to! [Smile]

Still looking for stuff I can use from the grocery store. I do have a juicer, any ideas?

I checked out the web sites everyone had recomended and gleened some info from them but not exactly what I'm looking for. Most of them try to sell you the books or ingredients or products. [shake]

I truly can't afford to buy anything in bulk or pay the shipping and handling. I do appreciate everyones input and I thank you very much. [kiss]

Someone emailed these to me:

Who knew?

Eliminate ear mites. All it takes is a few drops of Wesson Corn Oil in your cat's or dog's ear... massage it in, then clean with a cotton ball. Repeat daily for 3 days. The oil soothes the cat's skin, smothers the mites, and accelerates healing.

Kills fleas instantly... Dawn Dishwashing Liquid does the trick. Add a few drops to your dog's bath and shampoo the animal thoroughly. Rinse well to avoid skin irritations. Good-bye fleas.

< /SPAN>Rainy day cure for dog odor: Next time your dog comes in from the rain, simply wipe down the animal with Bounce or any dryer sheet, instantly making your dog smell springtime fresh.

Did you know that drinking two glasses of Gatorade can relieve headache pain almost immediately-without the unpleasant side effects caused by traditional pa in relievers?

Did you know that Colgate Toothpaste makes an excellent salve for burns?

Before you head to the drugstore for a high-priced inhaler filled with mysterious chemicals, try chewing on a couple of curiously strong Altoids peppermints. They'll clear up your stuffed nose.

Achy muscles from a bout of the flu? Mix 1 tablespoon horseradish in 1 cup of olive oil. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes, then apply it as a massage oil for instant relief for aching muscles.

Sore throat? Just mix 1/4 cup of vinegar with 1/4 cup of honey and take 1 tablespoon six times a day. The vinegar kills the bacteria.

Cure urinary tract infections with Alka-Seltzer. Just dissolve two tablets in a glass of water and drink it at the onset of the symptoms. Alka-Seltzer begins eliminating urinary tract infections almost inst antly-even though the product was never been advertised for this use.

Honey remedy for skin blemishes... cover the blemish with a dab of honey and place a Band-Aid over it. Honey kills the bacteria, keeps the skin sterile, and speeds healing. Works overnight.

Listerine therapy for toenail fungus: Get rid of unsightly toenail fungus by soaking your toes in ListerineMouthwash. The powerful antiseptic leaves your toenails looking healthy again.

Easy eyeglass protection... to prevent the screws in eyeglasses from loosening, apply a small drop of Maybelline Crys tal Clear Nail Polish to the threads of the screws before tightening them.

Cleaning liquid that doubles as bug killer... if menacing bees, wasps, hornets, or yellow jackets get in your home and you can't find the insecticide, try a spray of Formula 409. Insects drop to the ground instantly.

Smart splinter remover: Just pour a drop of Elmer's Glue-All over the splinter, let dry, and peel the dried glue off t he skin. The splinter sticks to the dried glue.

Hunt's Tomato Paste boil cure... cover the boil with Hunt's Tomato Paste as a compress. The acids from the tomatoes soothe the pain and bring the boil to a head.

Balm for broken blisters... to disinfect a broken blister, dab on a few drops o f Listerine, a powerful antiseptic.

Vinegar to heal bruises... soak a cotton ball in white vinegar and apply it t o the bruise for 1 hour. The vinegar reduces the blueness and speeds up the healing process.

Yea!! Just what I was looking for [woohoo]

Sizzled, as I was reading your post I remembered a couple of tricks I figured out too.

Flea troubles? Get a bar of plain old Ivory soap and grate it or shave it. Make a paste of the shavings and apply to your wet pet. Let sit for about 5 minutes and watch the fleas fall off.

My daughter was babysitting for someone and brought home head lice. We all got infested!!! [shake]
I used the rid stuff 3 times and couldn't get rid of them. Then I thought of what alcohol does, it dries out things.

So I bought 2 bottles of rubbing alcohol, soaked everyones head(hair and scalp) and coverd our heads with a plastic bag. After about 15 min. we washed our hair as usual. Just one treatment and we never saw those buggers again.

For foot pain-rub Vick's salve all over your feet before bedtime and put on a pair of socks. When you get up in the morning your feet will not be as painful.

To break a high fever- peel and cut an onion down through the center. Put a little bit of grease in a skillet and fry onion on both sides. Not til it falls apart, but just til it is hot. Take onion out of pan and let cool off til still warm. Take tube socks and tie a piece of onion to the bottom of each foot. Fever breaks within the hour.

The fire department shows up, comes in the house, run upstairs into the bedroom, pull back the blanket and......................................"SOAP?!"

This is not intended to make fun of anyone here, just myself for the stupid things that pop into my head every so often. So I thought I'd share.

My mother claimed that onion skins (or just the layers - I don't remember) on her feet saved her life when she was a child!

I think it broke a fever she was having...

Garlic seem to be the all around best home remedy for Lyme. I'm a bit allergic to it, though.

Some people swear by lemon in water for detoxing.

Epsom salt is a big favorite, too.

Lots of good stuff here everyone [Smile] Thank you so much.

I asked on another post about brewers yeast. My mom gave it to me when I was little because I'm such bait for blood suckers.

It worked really good as a repelent. I'm wanting to know if there's any problem with taking brewers yeast?

All other repelents I've tried make me sick or give me a horrible headache.

Eat a 1/2 spoonful of cardamom for Babesia, says Hardynaka who posts here, a few times a day. I eat it and it does seem to make me feel a bit better.

I quelled a belllyfull of candida yeast by eating raw garlic, 1/2 tsp ground cloves, and 1/2 tsp cinnamon.
