Did anyone have an allergic reaction to either the clear bandage or the skin proctectant when you had an IV? I have red bumps everywhere and am itching like a mad person!! driving me crazy! I have to call the pharmacy to order something different, I suppose... just wondering if anyone had advice as to what worked for them. thanks!

My husband has been dealing with this. The solution for him was changing to another brand/type of dressing. NexCare Premium Adhesive - Mediapore. It's breathable - but must be changed 2x week.

We had been using hydrocortisone cream to help with the itching - but the nurse said this was the exact WRONG thing to do. They prescribed some type of antifungal ointment that has been doing the trick.

My husband was also irritated by the tube guaze they used to cover his arm and protect the picc line - we switched over to a 100% cotton tube sock and that was much better for him.

Bottom line: Call your dr. or nurse to get a new type of dresing now - don't wait for it to get worse.

You might want to search lymenet there are some good discussions on picc coverings and adhesive allergies. Here's one:

http://flash.lymenet.org/scripts/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=060831

I had the allergic reaction you're describing and I couldn't get it resolved. I had to have the PICC pulled and go to daily infusions through a heplock needle.

Try to get it under control by trying other dressing changes. The home health care company tried dressing samples on my other arm so we could see what was least irritating.

update - due to allergy and then also infection (maybe from the allergy becoming infected?) had to pull the line. new arm now starting an allergy too so they think it may actually be chlorhexidine (the antiseptic) that I am allergic to. reading on line it looks like many people are allergic to it, but it is not thought about since it is supposed to be the antiseptic, so people don't think that could be the cause of the allergy. may be worth everyone's consideration.... I'll let you know if the new antiseptic does the trick so everyone can learn from my experience thanks!

I was also allergic to the antiseptic, and some of the other creams/ointments they sent out.

Switching dressings till we found the best one helped (took many tries) and also eliminating the antiseptic.

Hope you find a way to make it work for you.
