Hey everyone, I'm fairly new here but have been sick a couple years and having never heard about lyme till a month ago.

I've slowly been finding more similarities after looking up more and more topics so I'm finding it hopeful talking to people on here

This topic might have been covered before but i couldn't find anything - maybe i was searching wrong

But one thing i was really curious about is if anyone else has ever been (obviously since contracting lyme)overly sensitive to what would normally be a 'normal' dosage of certain medications or even supplements?

For example, I take half the lowest dose of an allergy pill and experience tons of the side effects to pretty extreme extents within a few hours

I used to be able to take a full pill of the highest dose everyday during the summer and not feel ANY side effects till about a year ago

anyone else??

-Matt

Hi Matt,

Yes. Abx I can't take high doses, it is slow and steady for me. Certain foods use to bother me, but now don't. Supplements I would take and have sensitivities to as well, as also faded during treatment.

I would let my LLMD know and avoid those things that make you feel worse (except the abx) until you see what your doctor says.

Make sure your allergy medication is NOT of the corticosteroid family...they are immunosuppressants and make symptoms worse. Call a pharmacist and ask.

Many of us are sensitive to one thing or another, even foods.

Do talk to your LLMD

Take care.

Also beware of Detoxification issues. If this happens with a lot of different families of medications, you'll know an issue is occurring in that area.

hey lymebytes,
my allergy meds are just OTC Reactine so its just an anti-histamine

but i have it with a bunch of things like i was trying to find something to help my skin (since thats gotten terrible since this all began)and wanted to try zinc supplements

it says on a bunch of forums that zinc does wonders for skin and to take about 25-50mg a day but dont take more than 100mg or u could get dry dry skin/eczema like stuff

I tried taking 10mg and the next day i was dead dry everywhere ... its the worst

I'm awaiting my Igenex results still and dont have an LLMD, actually going tomorrow to ask my family doc if he'll even refer me but ill let him know for sure

My experience has been with psychiatric medication.

I have been treated for depression/OCD/general

anxiety for about 13 years now, and used to be

able to tolerate higher doses of meds. Now I am

EXTREMELY sensitive and, if I start a new

medication, have to start on the lowest possible

dose. Also, I find that I don't develop as much of

a tolerance to meds with which one expects to

develop a tolerance, such as Dexedrine, which I

take for fatigue/attention/mood. I also have found

my sensitivity to OTC meds, like Benadryl, have

increased. I used to take 2 Benadryl to sleep at

night (the recommended dosage) and now can only

take half a pill, or a whole pill at most.

Just be aware of your sensitivity when starting

any new medication, and alert your doctors so they

can adjust any doses accordingly. Take care of

yourself!

hey easypearls,

have you been diagnosed with lyme and getting treatment?? I guess another main questions of mine to you and everyone else is if that sensitivity has lessened (even slightly) with treatment or even gone away?

I am very sensitive to regular doses of any psychiatric medication or sleep medication.....

...but for some reason with the antibiotics, etc, I CAN tolerate normal doses. (or at least I think I can, I do usually feel bad on them, so maybe not?)

Good luck.

sans,

I started abx tx for Lyme, was on Doxy for 2.5

weeks, developed horrible cramping and bloody

stool, stopped abx, and now have a colonoscopy

scheduled for a week from Wednesday. For the short

time I was on abx, I felt a definite decrease in

symptoms, including psychiatric. If, indeed, Lyme

caused my psychiatric problems, I will have had it

for at least 20 years. I am currently 28 and the

onset of OCD/Depression was age 8. Scary thought,

but I'm crossing my fingers that the psych stuff

is due to Lyme and will [hopefully!] go away with

adequate tx!

sans,

Sorry, I seem to have misread your question re:

sensitivity to meds going away with tx. I have not

been in tx long enough to know. Sorry!
